We picked a pop tune at the top of the charts -- one that wouldn't be an obvious candidate for an instrumental cover. "Rolling in the Deep" jumped out at us. The writers, Paul Epworth and Adele, described it as a "dark blues-y gospel disco tune." What could be more challenging for a classically-trained cellist and pianist? We locked ourselves in the studio (ok, not literally) and began work on the introduction. It wasn't working. The end. Just kidding...:-) The song came alive when we found a destined matchup in the melody from Gustav Holst's classical piece "Jupiter"—a deep melody that rang out when layered on top of everything we were creating for this arrangement. To make a long studio-story short, it all came together after that. ALL sounds were created by acoustic & electric cellos (5 different cellos) and piano. Rolling Stones: "Sympathy For The Devil," Beggars Banquet Studio Sessions, Olympic Sound Studios, London, 1968. The working title of the song was "The Devil Is My Name," In the film, the group goes through several iterations of the song, from almost a bluesy, folky ballad (similar to "Jigsaw Puzzle") to the freaked-out samba it ultimately became. During the sessions the words were changed from "who killed Kennedy?" to "who killed the Kennedy's?" after the assassination of Robert Kennedy. It was Richards who came up with the song's Samba arrangement, playing both bass and lead guitar. The druggy dissolution of Brian Jones is seen unvarnished in the film, his usefulness in the studio coming to an end (he is not heard on the finished track). Marianne faithful, Anita Pallenberg, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts, producer Jimmy Miller, Bill Wyman, Keith Richards are seen recording back up vocals but the "Whoo Whoo" backing vocals were overdubbed in Los Angeles by producer Jimmy Miller, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards alone.

A well-informed presenter, a superb sound balance and an uncluttered approach to camera work and direction all combined to set a gold standard in the televisual representation of jazz. It was also in the right place at the right time. The end of the long-standing deadlock between the Musicians' Union and the American Federation of Musicians meant that big names from the US were coming over to Britain for the first time since the 1930's. Many shows of its era are ill-represented in the BBC archives, as they were either junked after transmission or, if broadcast live, not recorded at all. Happily, this is not the case with 'Jazz 625'. With video tape recording still in its infancy, machines were in heavy demand. So, many programmes, particularly in the drama field, were 'telerecorded' onto 35mm film, from a feed of the studio output. This method made editing a lot easier, and has aided the survival of programmes recorded in this way. It's truly impossible to determine where rock 'n' roll was actually born, but Sun Studio in Memphis has as strong a claim as anywhere else. (Except, perhaps, Little Richard's loins.) Founded in 1950 by Sam Phillips, the studio—and its accompanying record label, Sun Records—was undeniably important in the history of the genre.Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis both graced Sun's tiny floors, but of course the most notable resident was Elvis Presley, who had a musical epiphany in the recording studio in 1953 with the song "That's All Right." In a way, Sun acted like indie labels did 20 years ago, nurturing young talent until bigger fish came along to snatch them away, as was the case with Elvis. After Presley moved on, Sun saw a serious dip in business, but his legacy eventually proved big enough to keep it afloat.U2 recorded a few songs at Sun for Rattle And Hum, and other artists have followed suit. According to our tour guide, Bob Dylan stopped by just to kiss the ground.These days, Sun offers tours during the day and still records bands at night. PBS recently began airing Sun Studio Sessions, with modern artists—from The Walkmen to Eli Reed—performing songs in the legendary space.

Recorded on February 1st, 2010, in the same studio as the original 25 years earlier (Henson Recording Studios, formerly A&M Recording Studios) "We Are The World 25 For Haiti", in which Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie serve as executive producers and producers, was created in collaboration with executive producers Wyclef Jean, Randy Phillips and Peter Tortorici; producers Humberto Gattica and RedOne; and co-producers Rickey Minor, Mervyn Warren and Patti Austin to benefit the Haitian earthquake relief efforts and the rebuilding of Haiti. Academy Award-winning writer-director Paul Haggis (Crash, Million Dollar Baby), whose own personal efforts as well as those of Artists for Peace and Justice have already saved countless lives in Haiti, filmed the private recording session to create the accompanying video and behind-the-scenes production, and serves as Film Director and as an Executive Producer with Jones, Richie, Jean, Phillips and Tortorici. The 25th Anniversary recording features over 80 artists and performers. The recording of We Are The World 25 For Haiti embodied the same enthusiasm, sense of purpose and generosity as the original recording 25 years ago. Every one of the artists who participated, regardless of genre or generation, walked into the room with their hearts and souls completely open to coming together to help the people of Haiti.
