The ship will be operated in a STOBAR configuration, with a 14.3 degree ski-jump on the bow and three arrestor wires on the stern of the angled deck. This will allow the operation of MiG-29K and Sea Harrier aircraft. The maximum take off length for the MiG-29K on the Vikramaditya will be between 160--180 metres. An added advantage of "Admiral Gorshkov' platform is its superstructure profile that has the potential to accommodate powerful planar or phased array radar systems with the "billboard style" antennae, which was first observed on the United States Navy's USS Long Beach, along with extensive command and control facilities to conduct an aerial campaign. The ship is also projected to be equipped with a robust combination of air defence weaponry, such as a SAM and/or a CIWS.

Indian Navy Air Craft Carrier INS Virat - 2

INS Viraat (R22) is a Centaur-class aircraft carrier currently in service with the Indian Navy.HMS Hermes was sold to India in 1984.Refitted, the ship was commissioned into the Indian Navy as the Viraat in May 1987. In September 1993, the engine room of Viraat flooded, temporarily putting the vessel out of service for several months. By 1995, the vessel was back in service and had a new search radar.Between July 1999 and April 2001, INS Viraat completed another life-extension refit which is expected to extend her serviceability till 2020. This refit upgraded propulsion systems, added a package of sensors to sound emergency alerts, and introduced modern communication systems. In addition, long-range surveillance radar, weapon systems, and new hangar with fire curtains was installed. The lift system was revamped to reduce reaction time in the event of an attack and a new flood alarm system was installed. In early June 2001 Viraat returned to service after nearly two years of refit. The vessel also took part in the International Fleet Review in Mumbai in February 2001. Wing commander Ashoka Padmanabhan flew the Tigermoth-B970 past its deck anchored at 1.5 nautical km from the Gateway of India. The vessel had to be towed back to dry dock for another refit in mid-2003 and returned to service only in November 2004, during which the vessel was fitted with the Barak SAM. Refitted again from July 1999 to December 2000, Viraat returned to the fleet in June 2001 and is planned to ...

Indian Navy INS Boeing P-8i Poseidon Aircraft - launch and recovery

In January 2008, Boeing proposed the P-8I, a customized export variant of the P-8A, for the Indian Navy. On 4 January 2009, India's Ministry of Defence signed an agreement with Boeing for the supply of eight P-8Is at a total cost of US$2.1 billion. These aircraft would replace Indian Navy's aging Tupolev Tu-142M maritime surveillance turboprops. Each aircraft will cost about US$220 million. The deal makes India the first international customer of the P-8, and also marks Boeing's first military sale to India. On 4 October 2010, India's Defence Acquisition Council of the Ministry of Defence cleared the purchase of four additional P-8Is.The contract details for the additional aircraft was concluded in 2010, and approved by India in March 2011 bringing the total number of aircraft on order to 12. The Data Link II communications technology for the P-8I was received by Boeing from Bharat Electronics Limited in April 2010. The communications system will enable exchange of tactical data and messages between Indian Navy aircraft, ships and shore establishments. Boeing will install the system during P-8I final assembly. The IFF, system from BEL was also handed over to Boeing for integration with P-8I in December 2010.

Indian Navy Sindhughosh kilo class submarines documentary 1/2

Sindhughosh class submarines are Indian variants of the Kilo class diesel-electric submarines in active service with the Indian Navy. Their names are in Sanskrit, but in their Roman-alphabet forms sometimes a final short -a is dropped. The Kilo class is the NATO reporting name for a naval diesel-electric submarine that is made in Russia. The original version of the vessels were designated Project 877 Paltus (Turbot) in Russia. There is also a more advanced version, designated as Improved Kilo in the west, and Project 636 Varshavyanka in Russia. The Kilo will be succeeded by the Lada class submarine, which began sea trials in 2005. The boats are mainly intended for anti-shipping and anti-submarine operations in relatively shallow waters. Original Project 877 boats are equipped with Rubikon MGK-400 sonar system (with NATO reporting name Shark Gill), which includes a mine detection and avoidance sonar MG-519 Arfa (with NATO reporting name Mouse Roar). Newer Project 636 boats are equipped with improved MGK-400EM, with MG-519 Afra also upgraded to MG-519EM. The improved sonar systems have reduced the number of operators needed by sharing the same console via automation. Anechoic tiles are fitted on casings and fins to absorb the sonar sound waves of active sonar, which results in a reduction and distortion of the return signal. These tiles also help attenuate sounds that are emitted from the submarine, thus reducing the range by which the sub may be detected by passive sonar ...

Chinese warship confronts Indian naval ship

The Indian and Chinese navies were involved in a face-off in the disputed South China Sea. A Chinese warship confronted an Indian naval vessel as it left Vietnamese waters in July but the Indian Navy has denied the reports. According to reports a Chinese warship, which remains unidentified, confronted India's INS Airawat, an amphibious assault vessel, and asked the ship to identify itself and explain its presence in the South China. London-based Financial Times reported that the Indian warship was in international waters after completing a scheduled port call in Vietnam. Government sources told CNN-IBN that the incident took place on July 22 when INS Airavat ship was 45 nautical miles from the Vietnamese coast and heading towards the Port of Haiphaong. An unidentified caller who claimed to be from the Chinese navy but was speaking in English told INS Airavat that the Indian ship was entering Chinese waters and they must leave. The Indian ship did not respond as there was no Chinese vessel anywhere on the horizon, sources said. According to the paper the actions of the Chinese warship is the latest example of Beijing's assertiveness which had irked India and Vietnam. China claimed that South China Sea in its entirety, rejecting claims by other nations like Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan over the resource rich region. The paper said that Vietnamese foreign ministry has acknowledged that the Indian warship had visited the country from July 19-22 but said, it had no ...

Indian Navy - Sea Warriors of INDIA

The Indian Navy is the naval branch of the armed forces of India. It currently has approximately 56000 personnel on active duty, including 5000 members of the naval aviation branch, 1200 marine commandos and 1000 Sagar Prahari Bal soldiers, making it the world's fifth largest navy in terms of personnel. The Indian Navy currently operates around 170 vessels, including the aircraft carrier INS Viraat, along with operational jet fighters. Though the primary objective of the navy is to secure national maritime borders, India also uses its navy to enhance its international relations through joint exercises, port visits and humanitarian missions, including disaster relief. In recent years, the Indian Navy has undergone extensive modernization and expansion meaning there is now a much more overt military and political readiness to establish 'blue water' capability. The Naval Crest consists of the Ashoka emblem, a foul anchor and a shield, and its navy blue colour. Below the crest is the motto of the Service- 'Shano Varuna' - meaning 'May the Lord of the Oceans be Auspicious Unto Us'. In India it is customary to acknowledge the gift of nature by offering felicitations to its presiding deity. Water is the greatest of such gifts and Varuna is its presiding deity. And hence the Vedic prayer 'Shano Varuna' - meaning 'Be Auspicious Unto Us, oh Varuna!'. 18 Mar 1952 is an important date in the maritime history of India. It was then that Chakravarti Rajagopalachari gave to the Indian ...

Chief Test pilot of India's National Flight Test Centre, Naval Captain Jaideep Avinash Maolankar, spoke at the seminar organised during the biennial Aero India Air Show held in the Indian city of Bengaluru [Bangalore] in the month of February in 2011. He spoke about the Naval version of the Light Combat Aircraft, especially, the trainer version that is currently under development. He stressed upon some of the features that are unique to the Naval version, like addition of the LEVECON surface to enable low speed handling of the aircraft, strengthened undercarriage to sustain the stresses imparted during carrier landing, modified intake to permit air flow at low speeds. Some unique features have already been implemented, some would be put in place in the next iterative prototype, while some that have been implements, would need to undergo a review & re-design. He also talked in depth about the flight test plans scheduled for the Naval version of the LCA, to monitor & evaluate flight parameter unique to Naval aircrafts. He touched upon the Shore Based Test Facility [SBTF] that is being constructed in Goa & the associated telemetry monitoring systems being put in place A must watch lecture. Indian Navy Tupolev-142 lands after anti-piracy mission on 5 May 2011

Video of Indian Navy Tu-142 landing after an anti-piracy mission over the Arabian Sea on 5 May 2011. On the morning of 05 May, an Indian Navy's TU 142 aircraft's persistant efforts led to pirates fleeing from a Chinese merchant vessel MV Full City. At about 0845 hrs on 05 May 11, the Indian Navy received an SOS call regarding a pirate attack on Chinese merchant vessel MV Full City about 450 nm (850 kms) West of Karwar. The Indian Navy immediately diverted an IN aircraft and a CG ship. The TU 142 (Maritime Reconnaisance) aircraft of the Indian Navy, which was on anti piracy patrol, arrived overhead MV Full City in less than 30 minutes. The aircraft observed a pirate mother ship next to MV Full City and an empty skiff alongside the ship. The aircraft made a number of low passes over the ship and strongly warned the pirates, on radio, to leave the merchant ship immediately, stating that Naval warships were closing in the area. The aircraft observed that the warning had the desired effect and the skiff was seen fleeing from the ship along with the pirates and heading for its mother ship nearby. As there were no surface forces in the immediate vicinity to board MV Full City and sanitise the ship, the IN aircraft maintained overhead MV Full City for over three hours assisting the rescue operation by co-ordinating with the NATO Task Force. The TU aircraft finally left the area after over four hours, having successfully freed MV Full City from the pirate attack and, ensuring that ...
