There are some training techniques in sport and other body-based practices which involve the mobilisation of mental models. Typically these will involve some visualisable image and/or action. The technique is supposed to be effective because these images schematically organise what would otherwise be very complex and detailed sets of behaviours into a single gestalt, so rather than having to think about many different individual movements and adjustments the person concentrates on the visual image and this does the organising for them. I'm just wondering whether there might be correlates of this principle within the organisation of philosophical, ethical, or ideological behaviours. Like complex physical actions, maintaining a morality requires the organising of many different, separate, and highly detailed moral choices, across a wide range of ethically problematic situations. Having to approach each of these choices individually would be incredibly resource-intensive and inefficient, in the same way that having to think about the action of each muscle when walking would be inefficient. It would probably be better to have a single mental image or schema which co-ordinated and structured these moral behaviours, allowing them to function coherently and optimally.
