Ha valaki angolul szól hozzám némi akcentussal, azon nem szoktam meglepődni. Egy világnyelvet sok nemzet használhat, nincs ezzel semmi baj. Annál inkább meglepődöm viszont azon, ha angolul kérdezek és magyarul válaszolnak, angol akcentussal. Egyik este biliárdozni szerettünk volna egy barátommal, de az egyetlen asztal foglalt volt a helyen, ahova mentünk. A két srác, akik játszottak, angolul beszéltek egymással, így én is angolul fordultam hozzájuk, hogy a következő körben beszállnánk a játékba. Értelemszerűen angolul is válaszoltak, hogy persze, majd szólnak a végén. Akkor lepődtem csak meg nagyon, amikor odajöttek az asztalunkhoz, és azt mondták: Gyertek játszani! Owen és Sul két londoni srác, akik nyelvészetet tanultak Angliában, de úgy érezték, hogy a klasszikus, latin gyökerű nyelvekben nem találnak elég kihívást. Kedvenc tanárukhoz fordultak hát, aki azt mondta lelkes diákjainak: Tanuljatok magyarul! És hogy miért? George Bernard Shaw, ír drámaíró (tehát az angolszász kultúra képviselője) az amerikai CBC-csatornának adott interjújában azt mondta: „Bátran kijelenthetem, hogy miután évekig tanulmányoztam a magyar nyelvet, meggyőződésemmé vált: ha a magyar lett volna az anyanyelvem, az életművem sokkal értékesebb lehetett volna. Egyszerűen azért, mert ezen a különös, ősi erőtől duzzadó nyelven sokszorta pontosabban lehet leírni a parányi különbségeket, az érzelmek titkos rezdüléseit." És most legyünk egy kicsit büszkék arra, hogy magyarul beszélünk.

THE BATTLE OF INGLIS' BAKERY sung by Margaret Power of Belfast
On 9 August 1971 a small Official IRA unit led by Staff Captain Joe McCann seized Inglis' Bakery and fortified it against an oncoming assault by the British Army. Over 600 British troops were on the way into the Markets area of Belfast to round up suspected IRA members for Internment without trial. Joe and his unit fought all night, outnumbered by about 100 to 1, and held off the British Army allowing many Republican Activists the time to make an escape. This musical celebration of that event is sung by Margaret Power. She was the mother of Thomas "Ta" Power, a famous Belfast Republican Socialist. He and his family were friends and comrades of Joe McCann.
