Pillow Talk - An Interaction Design Project

Pillow Talk is a project aiming to network long distance lovers. Each lover has a pillow and a chest sensor which they wear to bed at night. Their chest sensor wirelessly transmits and communicates with the other persons pillow. When each person goes to bed, their lovers pillow begins to glow softly to indicate their presence. Placing your head on the pillow allows you to hear the real-time heartbeat of your lover. The result is an intimate interaction between two lovers, regardless of the distance between them.

The Interaction Design of APIs

(April 17, 2009) Alex Payne explores the interaction design of APIs, particularly through the lens of the speaker's experience evolving the popular Twitter API. The speaker argues for the notion of a "humane" API", one derived from simplicity, "explorability" and consistency. Alex Payne is API Lead at Twitter, Inc., a communications service used by millions to share short messages. Amusity - Musical Coffee Table - Interaction Design

Amusity is a interactive tangible user interface coffee table, that displays your entire music collection. Amusity allows you to play, watch the music video and see additional information about each song. In addition meta data such as popularity and genre control the way the music is displayed - popular songs in the center, rare songs in the outskirts. In addition activating a certain song will display recommended songs based on past play lists

Stephen Anderson's Seductive Interaction Design

For more on this seminar, visit: www.uie.com More and more, we're seeing web sites use rewards systems, competitions, and fun progress indicators to get people engaged. Interactions such as these trigger different elements of human behavior, and encourage your visitors to engage with your web site more. They differentiate the casual glance from a longer involvement with your site. What simple things can you do to increase engagement? Is there a place for fun in business sites? What are some of the ideas from psychology that apply to design? A while back, LinkedIn experimented with a feature: a little meter above the user's information, showing their profile's "percentage completed." Suddenly, more users filled out their profiles. The feature didn't have a clever interface, a sophisticated information architecture, or show any technical prowess. It just leveraged basic human psychology. Seductive interactions take us to a new level in design. They leverage the latest advancements in social science, psychology, and behavioral economics.

Partridge on interaction design

Alan illustrates a hierarchy of alerts within the dashboard/fascia control system of the Rover 200. The scene is the Linton Travel Tavern car-park. Alan is completely bored and has called Lynn into the car for some 'paid conversation'. He's further exasperated as he doesn't know why his Rover make an alarm noise when he turns the key in the ignition. For the last ten minutes, he's been exploring the possible reasons for the alarm. Lynn's suggestions serve only to force Alan to explain a few things about in-car control systems ... Part of this post: www.cityofsound.com

The Design of Implicit Interactions

May 18, 2007 lecture by Wendy Ju for the Stanford University Human-Computer Interaction Seminar (CS 547). The infiltration of computer technologies into everyday life has brought the problems of traditional interaction design to a head. As we begin to design products which adapt their behaviors, which infer what we are doing, and which try to assist us proactively, we need new ways of thinking about how to design these interactive products so that they are more helpful than they are annoying. In this presentation, Wendy outlines implicit interactions as an emerging area of applied design research that investigates the design of implicit interactions, which occur without the behest of awareness of the user. This is an application video for the university of applied science and technology at Berlin. We had to make something with the topic "Tunnel". So I made a map with my own textures and without any models with the Source engine. I didn't use any content from the original game (Half life 2, Portal, Css, etc.) and made over 100 textures on my own. I was accepted and currently studing in Berlin ;) Sorry for the bad quality, had some problems with uploading this video.

Acoustic Poetry - An Interaction Design Project

Acoustic Poetry is a conceptual object through which profoundly deaf individuals can explore soundscapes in everyday situations or special occasions. This is to enrich the connection with their environment, a rare intention in medical sound awareness devices. Acoustic poetry seeks to spark a conversation about how designing for deaf culture could be more exploratory and emotional. When the individual feels curious about a particular situation, they can use the object to broadcast an audio sample of the environment to a human interpreter. After listening in, the interpreter crafts a profound, poetic description of the soundscape, which is then sent back and displayed on the object.

Lightrail "Moving with Interactive Design" 1 (HD)

[www.luminoux.com] The "Moving with Interactive Design" video of the Lightrail, in which Dutch dancer & Laban/Bartenieff movement analyst Roos van Berkel improvises while interacting with the behavior of the Lightrail. ----------------------------- From April 09 till June 09 , three designers visited the University of California in San Diego to collaborate in a design project. Frank de Jong, Pakwing Man & Eric Toering worked with professor David Kirsh and students from the cognitive science department to develop an interactive installation based upon the work of world famous dance choreographer Wayne McGregor. The result is a self made installation that focusses on experience instead of functionality. By using exclusive video material as input, the installation tries to show visitors the complexity of the dance piece by using an accessible interaction. People can use their whole body to touch the Lightrail and play with light that runs through the tubes. The installation was placed in the Sadlers Wells theater in London (United Kingdom) from 13 to 17 October 09 during the world premiere of Wayne McGregors new dance piece. About 8000 people were present during this prestigious event. ----------------------------- Camera & Editing: Frank de Jong Music: Apparat - You Don't Know Me

lynda.com tutorial | Hello Design, Interactive Design Studio

Watch the entire tutorial at www.lynda.com After graduating from an Ivy League school, Hello Design CEO and Creative Director David Lai considered attending Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He had heard great things about the school, but in the early days of interactive design, its program wasn't fully developed. Flash forward only six months and David was teaching at Art Center. It's this passion to learn, discover, and teach that propelled Hello so quickly to the front of the interactive pack. With prestigious clients like Herman Miller, The Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Taylor Made Golf, they innovate as they create. Hello draws from a bottomless toolbox, trying the untried and making it sing. In this installment of Creative Inspirations, watch an iPhone conduct a symphony orchestra, a golf club sell itself, and a talented designer learn to make a fine espresso as we present Hello Design, Interactive Design Studio.

Proxemic Interaction: Designing for a Proximity and Orientation-Aware Environment

In the everyday world, much of what we do is dictated by how we interpret spatial relationships. This is called proxemics. What is surprising is how little spatial relationships are used in interaction design, ie, in terms of mediating people's interactions with surrounding digital devices such as digital surfaces, mobile phones, and computers. Our interest is in proxemic interaction, which imagines a world of devices that has fine-grained knowledge of nearby people and other devices -- how they move into range, their precise distance, and even their orientation -- and how such knowledge can be exploited to design interaction techniques. In particular, we show how we used proxemic information to regulate implicit and explicit interaction techniques. We also show how proxemic interactions can be triggered by continuous movement, or by movement in and out of discrete proxemic regions. We illustrate these concepts with the design of an interactive vertical display surface that recognizes the proximity of surrounding people, digital devices, and non-digital artefacts -- all in relation to the surface but also the surrounding environment. Our example application is an interactive media player that implicitly reacts to the approach and orientation of people and their personal devices, and that tailors explicit interaction methods to fit.
