Little Tokyo Intercultural Presentation Speech 174

Hey everyone! This is my video project showing clips and pictures from my trip to Little Tokyo. I apologize for the terrible audio and not-so-hot footage! Terms used: High context culture Collectivistic culture Haptics Olfactics Proeximcs Unfortunately one of my audio clips did not make it into the video! I know that I included it in my project but it didn't transfer over when I uploaded. Here is what I said: I chose Little Tokyo in Los Angeles because I was never interested in Japanese culture and would never visit it on my own, making it an ideal place to do my video project on.

THE TOTEM POLE: AN INTERCULTURAL HISTORY

By Aldona Jonaitis and Aaron Glass www.washington.edu "Writing a poem is like trying to describe a totemic column which passes right through and beyond the world. We see it, but its existence is elsewhere." -Stanley Diamond, Totems The Northwest Coast totem pole captivates the imagination. From the first descriptions of these tall carved monuments, totem poles have become central icons of the Northwest Coast region and symbols of its Native inhabitants. Although many of those who gaze at these carvings assume that they are ancient artifacts, the so-called totem pole is a relatively recent artistic development, one that has become immensely important to Northwest Coast people and has simultaneously gained a common place in popular culture from fashion to the funny pages. The Totem Pole reconstructs the intercultural history of the art form in its myriad manifestations from the eighteenth century to the present. Aldona Jonaitis and Aaron Glass analyze the totem pole's continual transformation since Europeans first arrived on the scene, investigate its various functions in different contexts, and address the significant influence of colonialism on the proliferation and distribution of carved poles. The authors also describe their theories on the development of the art form: its spread from the Northwest Coast to world's fairs and global theme parks; its integration with the history of tourism and its transformation into a signifier of place; the role of governments, museums ...

Proyecto Salud Intercultural 1/6

For the past 15 years NORDECO has provided technical assistance and supervision of the Indigenous Health Project in Peruvian Amazon. The Project began in 1993 and is carried out by the Interethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Rainforest (AIDESEP), and three regional indigenous organizations in the northeast Ucayali region of Peru. The project is funded by the Danish Karen Elise Jensen Fund. The project is developing an indigenous health system based on the integration of western and indigenous knowledge and medical systems. The health system takes into account differences in conceptions and curing practices among different indigenous groups. The health system is a present being replicated in other parts of the Amazon. The Project has developed a health career named Amazon Intercultural Health Professionals, which can be studied at the Higher Teaching Institute of Atalaya (ISTA), in Atalaya, Ucayali. The study, which includes extensive field practice with shamans and healers, has been officially approved and recognized by the Ministry of Health in Peru. The first class had twenty students from Ashaninka, Asheninka, Yine and Shipibo groups who completed the three years full time study in early 2008. They received their title and diploma at a graduation ceremony and the first class was named Karen Elise Jensen, in memory of the distinguished Danish doctor who gave name to the foundation. (What To Do!)Intercultural communication the Nurse-Client Relationship

The use of effective intercultural communication through patience, sensitivity, verbal and non-verbal communication, touch and facial expressions were illustrated as being important factors in developing a therapeutic nurse-client relationship. During WHAT TO DO the health care workers exhibited a cultural sensitive approach toward their client through verbal and non-verbal carative gestures. The healthcare workers were very accommodating, which helped to facilitate the understanding of the conflicting position that the Nigerian client was facing. A study conducted by Duggan & Parrot (2001) illustrated that clients disclosed more about their illness beliefs and emotions when their physicians use more non-verbal communication associated with good rapport. During our video-enactment, one of the most obvious forms of nonverbal intercultural communication was to observe the expression of emotion on the face of the client. The display of emotion is universal and is an indication of pain, anger, sadness, happiness and calmness, which was indicated in the video. Acquiring cultural knowledge begins with the recognition that behaviours and responses that are viewed one way in one cultural context may be viewed in another way, or have a different meaning, in another cultural context. Ask Victoria: Viewer Topic: Intercultural Marriage...HELP!

Click here for my double meditation album on iTunes: bit.ly Sarah has written in about her intercultural marriage and the immense meddling of her in laws. The couple has not established good boundaries and have left themselves very open to having their life choices being overrun by his parents who are of a different culture than Sarah. Mainly, the culture difference isn't the real problem, the lack of firm boundaries on the couple's part is the true issue to be dealt with.

Delphine Mnard talks about the cultural differences which could have an impact on business. She illustrates her ideas with a comparison between Germans and French, that might be the way of how to deal with being on time or there actually business is done during a meeting versus the lunch afterwards. Delphine has a rich experience working in that area for wikipedia.org. She also shows how the cultural influences have an impact on the wikipedia structures in the different countries.
