The Private Eye and The Interdisciplinary Mind

Founder Kerry Ruef introduces The Private Eye, shows examples of students using the process, student artwork and writing. Hear teachers talk about the effect of using the program in their classrooms, and about The Private Eye Training-the-Trainers Institute. The Private Eye is a nationally acclaimed, hands-on interdisciplinary process that rivets the eye and rockets the mind. With everyday objects, The Private Eye's easy questioning strategy, and an almost magical tool—a jeweler's loupe—you'll accelerate concentration, critical thinking and creativity for all ages and all ability levels, K-16, through life. In the arts or the sciences, you'll build close observation skills linked to the mental muscle of thinking by analogy. Learners write, draw and theorize at higher levels. Join us, along with millions of students and teachers. Discover new worlds. Magnify minds. Find out more at: www.the-private-eye.com Video produced by Sector 550

Emory's Interdisciplinary Major (IDS) Allows Students to Structure Program of Study

Interdisciplinary Studies in Culture and Society is the only major at Emory University that allows students to structure their own program of study around a field of interests that they themselves define. It is designed for independently minded students who wish to study culture and society but whose interests are broader than those accommodated by a single discipline. As part of the major, students are permitted to take courses in a number of departments, provided they meet appropriate departmental prerequisites. For more information, see www.ila.emory.edu

TEDxBYU - David Wiley - An Interdisciplinary Path to Innovation

David Wiley, Associate Professor of Instructional Psychology and Technology, discusses the future of education. He argues that the mass personalization of education will lead to a better system. In thespirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxBYU, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

Mastering Interdisciplinary Treatment Planning

There is nothing more rewarding in the practice of dentistry than working with a team of like-minded dental professionals to solve complex functional/esthetic problems. This hands-on dental continuing education course will provide a unique opportunity for Restorative Dentists to bring their Orthodontist, Periodontist and Oral Surgeon together for a learning retreat. Dr. John Cranham's Interdisciplinary Team (Albert Koniko DDS-Periodontist, Carl Roy DDS-Orthodontist and Mike Maugeri-Oral Surgeon) will share their expertise on how they created a shared philosophy of esthetics, occlusion, case planning, sequencing, and day-to-day communication.

Vanderbilt-Meharry Interdisciplinary Clinical Case Competition

On September 23, 2009, the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance sponsored the Inaugural Interdisciplinary Clinical Case Competition. The fourth and final round of the case competition was held before a crowd of over 200 at Meharry Medical College. Vanderbilt School of Medicine faculty member Terrence S. Dermody moderated the event while a jury of faculty from all disciplines included in the competition watched from front row seats. While the event was comprised primarily of Meharry (Medicine, Dentistry, and Public Health) and Vanderbilt programs (Medicine, Law, Dietetic Internship, Nursing), two programs (Pharmacy and Master of Social Work) were from the University of Tennessee. In addition, the planning team partnered with the Tennessee Department of Childrens Services, Metro Health Department, and Vanderbilts Center of Excellence for Children in Custody.

A neuroethological perspective on animal play behavior

Toward a universal mammalian theory of play utlizing a phenominological perspective of the subjective experience of play and the respective psychobiological substrates. My proposed theory is that play evolved as a neurobiological mechanism that induces a cerebral environment conducive to neuroplastic changes in nervous structure.
