Cessna lands on highway Interstate 95
This is a news report of a recent emergency landing (and take-off, after repairs) of a Cessna on the Interstate 95 stretch not far from me. Great video of the aircraft taking off, right at the DOT camera! That's not often seen, so it's here for your viewing enjoyment. As usual, the local news has enough inaccuracies to make this somewhat amusing. Earlier reports stated that an Essna aircraft had to take off from the highway, then it noted that the small aircraft's engines were running at full power to make the take off. A "mere 600 yards" available for taking off! The Cessna could make three take-offs with that much length, but clearly the reporter is not a pilot. This report shows the "malfunctioned fuel cylinder" briefly, which I always thought was an engine cylinder. The DOT worker adds a bit of local entertainment, certainly, "By golly, I'll tell you what!"

The Iowa State Patrol released dash-camera video Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, of an extensive chase Aug. 10 that ended with the arrest of a Memphis man. Jason Hervey, 29, was arrested after the high-speed chase along Highway 965 and Interstate 80. The Iowa State Patrol said the chase began when a North Liberty police officer attempted to stop Herveys car for tinted windows and no front license plate. Hervey eluded the officer and sped off, leading officers on a chase that reached speeds over 100 mph. The chase ended when a troopers cruiser struck Herveys car, sending it sliding into the median. Hervey was charged with eluding, an aggravated misdemeanor, and five traffic citations, including reckless driving, speeding, following too close and improper use of lanes.

Here's some video I shot of Iowa Interstate's QJ 2-10-2 steam locomotives passing through West Liberty, Iowa on October 18th, 2008, at around 8:15 in the morning. The two locomotives were double-heading a revenue freight train, setting a new world record for the most tonnage hauled by steam in the 21st century. This was CERTAINLY worth seeing!

LAFD 1st Interstate Bank Fire
During the late evening of May 4, 1988, and the early morning of May 5, 1988, members of the Los Angeles City Fire Department successfully battled what has proven to be the worst, most devastating high-rise fire in the history of Los Angeles. Extinguishing this blaze at the 62-story First Interstate Bank Building, 707 West Wilshire Boulevard, required the combined efforts of 64 fire companies, 10 City rescue ambulances, 17 private ambulances, 4 helicopters, 53 Command Officers and support personnel, a complement of 383 Firefighters and Paramedics, and considerable assistance from other City departments. It is humbling and terrifying to realize how close we came to losing control of this fire! Had it not been for the extraordinary commitment to duty, staunch determination to extinguish the fire at all costs, and unabated heroism and courage of our brave Firefighters, I am convinced that the fire would not have been contained as it was in 3-1/2 hours. In most other cities, the building could have become a charred skeleton and, even worse, Firefighters would have lost their lives. In my view, our City is blessed with the most professional and dedicated Firefighters in the world, and this is why only one civilian life was lost and only four floors were gutted. The Department has documented specific acts of heroism for future recognition, but I feel compelled to personally thank you for performing your assigned role at the First Interstate Bank Fire.
