Les Invalides in Paris, France consists of a complex of buildings in the 7th arrondissement containing museums and monuments, all relating to the military history of France, as well as a hospital and a retirement home for war veterans, the building's original purpose. It is also the burial site for some of France's war heroes.The most notable tomb at Les Invalides is that of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) Napoleon was initially interred on Saint Helena, but King Louis-Philippe arranged for his remains to be brought to St Jerome's Chapel in Paris in 1840. A renovation of Les Invalides took many years, but in 1861 Napoleon was moved to the most prominent location under the dome at Les Invalides.

Most people think of Invalides as Napoleon's Tomb. But there was a church there over 150 years before the mausoleum was tacked on. It was the chapel for the Old Soldiers' Home (Invalides), & it's generally known among Parisians as the Soldiers' Church. It also seems to be popular for the weddings of Parisian bluebloods. I've visited the place several times, & invariably there's someone getting hitched -- generally attended by men in very nice suits & women with very large hats. I've always been partial to Virgil Fox's interpretation of this Vierne Scherzo; I had my Organ Epiphany hearing his recording of it. But he played it lickety-split, with lots of manual changes (pure Virgil, of course). This performance, by Pierre Gazin, is much more elegant. The instrument dates from 1636, with several revisions to its current incarnation of 3 manuals, 64 stops & 89 ranks. A superb instrument in a superb acoustical environment.

L'hôtel national des Invalides est un monument parisien dont la construction fut ordonnée par Louis XIV par l'ordonnance du 24 février 1670, pour abriter les invalides de ses armées. Aujourd'hui, il accueille toujours des invalides, mais également plusieurs musées et une nécropole militaire. Le roi Louis XIV souhaitait comme ses prédécesseurs Henri III et Henri IV, assurer aide et assistance aux soldats invalides de ses armées ; pour que « ceux qui ont exposé leur vie et prodigué leur sang pour la défense de la monarchie (...) passent le reste de leur jours dans la tranquillité », dit l'édit royal de 1670. Situés dans la plaine de Grenelle, alors faubourg de Paris, les travaux des bâtiments principaux sont confiés à Libéral Bruant par Louvois. Libéral Bruant conçoit une organisation en cinq cours, centrée sur la plus grande : la cour royale. Les travaux sont menés entre mars 1671 et février 1677, ce qui peut être qualifiés de rapides (les premiers pensionnaires sont hébergés dès octobre 1674). La face arrière de la grande cour est cependant détruite moins d'un an après son achèvement, pour laisser place aux fondations du grand dôme. L'église, initialement prévue par Libéral Bruant, semble déplaire et sa construction est confiée à partir de mars 1676 à Jules Hardouin-Mansart qui travaille également aux pavillons d'entrée et aux infirmeries. La construction de l'édifice religieux dure près de trente ans et n'est achevée que le 28 août 1706, date de la remise des clés par l <b>...</b>
