Video of Blackwater Contractors Driving Over Iraqi Woman

Cenk Uygur discusses a video recently released by Harper's Magazine that shows private contractors from Blackwater in Iraq hitting cars in traffic and running over a woman then fleeing the scene. Blackwater is the mercenary firm founded as Blackwater USA in 1996 by former Navy SEAL and fundamentalist Christian Erik Prince. It received no-bid contracts from the Bush administration in Iraq, Afghanistan, and post-Katrina New Orleans. In 2009, Prince resigned as CEO. Amid scandals over misbehavior by Blackwater employees in Iraq, the company renamed itself Blackwater Worldwide in 2007, Xe Services in 2009, and Academi in 2011. Iraqi refugees return home from Syria

As the uprising against the rule of Bashar al-Assad in Syria enters its 12th month, thousands of Iraqis who fled their own country are now starting to return home. During the worst of the violence caused by the US-led war in Iraq, almost a million Iraqis crossed over to Syria, some of them registering with the UN refugee agency in the hope of being resettled. Al Jazeera's Jane Arraf reports from Baghdad on how many are now giving up that dream.

Iraqi gay community and 'emos' fear abuse, violence

Twenty-five-year old Roby Hurriya holds two pictures of his friend Saif Asmar lying dead on the ground, having been brutally killed by Iraqi religious police for having a "emo" hairstyle last month. Hurriya, a doctor's assistant and also as a gay activist does not want to reveal his real name so he uses Hurriya, which means "freedom" in Arabic. He holds his mobile phone with a picture of Asmar prior to his death, a teenager with a stylish haircut and another image of him dead, his body sprawled in the back of white pickup truck with his head fractured and bleeding. "They laid him down on the pavement and smashed his head with a cement block," he said. In Iraq, the gay community has been living in fear for years, as religious militia maintain control of the streets in the sectarian warfare which followed the 2003 US-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein. Hurriya says in the past two months the killings have increased and are the worst he has seen. He also says that he believes at least 200 men have been murdered for their homosexuality or appearing effeminate. He personally knows 66 of them. In the beginning of the year, death squads targeted two separate groups - homosexuals, and those dressed as "emo", a uniquely Western-influenced style, which for some in Iraq is associated with homosexuality. According to local security and medical sources, at least 14 young men have been bludgeoned to death in a span of three weeks in east Baghdad, an area dominated by Shiite ...

Please rate, comment and share PLUCKY Melbourne singer Emmanuel Kelly is dreaming of a recording career after moving tough judges to tears on 'The X Factor'. Emmanuel, the adopted son of Children First Foundation boss Moira Kelly, wowed Ronan Keating, Spice Girl Mel Brown, Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Guy Sebastian with his heartfelt performance of the John Lennon classic Imagine on last night's audition show. Emmanuel and his brother Ahmed were adopted from Iraq, both suffering limb deficiencies as a result of chemical warfare. They were abandoned at an orphanage and rescued by Ms Kelly, who is also the guardian of the once-conjoined Bangladeshi twins, Krishna and Trishna. Emmanuel said it was "more than magic" to be on X Factor". "Words could not describe what I was feeling on that stage," he said. "When I got up and started singing, there was nothing else. Adrenalin just took over. It was just a blur." Emmanuel said he believes he had a gift. "Singing is what I love doing and singing is the only thing I want to do," he said. "I know plenty of singers that are 50 times better than I am, it is just they chose not to follow that path. Singing is the path I want to follow and some doors have opened up now and I just want to push even more. "I just want to sing and I want to make people happy." Kelly said his damaged limbs had not held him back and that he was not looking for sympathy. "I have actually been through nothing compared to some of the other kids I have met and ...

Iraqis recount human cost of war

More than 4000 US soldiers were killed and tens of thousands more injured after nearly nine years of war in Iraq. But the number of Iraqi civilians killed in the conflict is much higher. There are no official statistics -- but according to the latest estimates, more than a hundred thousand innocent Iraqis were killed during and after the US-led invasion of 2003. Some estimates even put that number at a million. Al Jazeera's Omar Al Saleh reports from the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

The UN estimates that one in five women in Iraq suffer from domestic abuse, in a society where a woman leaving her husband for any reason is considered grounds for punishment. But even for women who do manage to escape their abuse, there are few places in the country they can go to seek refugee. Al Jazeera's Jane Arraf has this exclusive report from the capital, Baghdad.

Iraqi sprinter challenges gender and social barriers

Turmoil in Iraq has not hindered Angham Khaz'al from pursuing her passion for sprinting. Dressed in a headscarf and a modest tracksuit, 25-year-old Khaz'al is the only professional female athlete in Basra, training with male athletes under the supervision of her mother, a physical education professor at the local university, and her father, a track and field coach. Khaz'al says the increasing influence of Shiite religious parties and militants in Basra since the fall of the regime in 2003 has forced around 30 female athletes to quit their career out of fear. "The situation has changed and the security conditions are not good, and female athletes suffer when they come to the field because of criticism from society. But being an athlete and an Asian champion, I managed to pursue my career, helped by my father and mother who coach the national team," she said. But Kha'zal didn't let cultural or religious taboos, or the lack of substantial training facilities stop her from participating in sprinting. She and her family were even violently targeted by more conservative members of society who were against her being an athlete. "Someone threw hand grenades at our house. I stopped training for nearly three months, then for one month and after that for nearly two months. But I never abandoned sport," Khaz'al said. Her parents' encouragement kept her going, despite two of her older sisters quitting because of harassment. "Each time I stopped for a short time out of fear and then I ...

Blast kills Iraqi Shia pilgrims in Basra

A suicide attack has killed at least 53 Shia Muslim pilgrims and left another 137 wounded in Iraq's southern city of Basra, local police say. The attacker, wearing a suicide vest, was said to have been disguised as a policeman when he targeted pilgrims who were passing through a checkpoint on the outskirts of the city on Saturday. The pilgrims were heading towards a Shia mosque in the busy al-Zubair district, west of Basra city. The mosque is home to a seventh century shrine. The attacks on Shia Muslim worshippers have been blamed on al-Qaeda linked forces. Al Jazeera's Jane Arraf reports from Baghdad.

90 Iraqi Students Allegedly Killed for 'Emo' Lifestyle

Transcript by www.newsy.com BY ALLIE SPILLYARDS Ninety students killed by stones in Baghdad in the last month. Their crime? It's all about their haircuts and the way they dress. The UK's Daily Mail explains. "Iraq's Moral Police released a statement on the interior ministry's website condemning the 'emo phenomenon' among Iraqi youth, declaring its intent to 'eliminate' the trend. The move is part of a wider clampdown on young people taking on what government officials call 'Western appearances' in Iraq." Europe's Pink News explains — there's been some build-up to these attacks. "Moral panic has been stirred up by militias about emo youth for the last year, alleging they are adulterers, Satanists, vampires and sexually depraved." Al Arabiya reports — reactions to the attacks are mixed. The publication cites a long list of Iraqi religious leaders' responses including... "'Emos' are 'fools' and 'experts must finish them...'Emo' youth is an act of 'terrorism' and a 'bad phenomenon for the peaceful co-existence project...' [and] 'The killing of 'Emo' teenagers in the country was exaggerated and fabricated." Some now speculate the attacks could lead to a bigger problem. Irish men's website Joe cites an account from an Arabic publication. "Another Middle East news outlet, Sumaria News, is ... reporting... they have also received reports of 'mysterious' suicides from similarly attired teens that had occurred in other Iraqi provinces." And while the number of speculated deaths ...

Iraqi Women's Activist Rebuffs US Claims of a Freer Iraq: "This Is Not a Democratic Country"

DemocracyNow.org - Yanar Mohammed, president of the Organization of Women's Freedom in Iraq, is interviewed on Democracy Now! about the impact of the nearly nine-year long US occupation, particularly on Iraqi women. "The Iraqi cities are now much more destroyed than they were five years ago," Mohammed says. "At the same time, we have turned to a society of 99 percent poor and 1 percent rich due to the policies that were imposed in Iraq." Moahmmed decries the repression of Iraqi protesters that joined the Arab Spring in a February 25th action. "The women are the biggest losers in all of this. We went to the Iraqi squares, we demonstrated, but got oppressed in ways that are new to Iraqi people. Anti-riot police of the American style was something that we witnessed there ... "Iraqi Reload" Method for the AK

The Iraqi reload method for the AK is one that does not make too much sense. The Iraqi reload has you hold your gun with minimal control and requires fine motor skills versus gross motor skills. The Iraqi reload method in my opinion is not of a trick and does not belong in a combat environment. Reloading the AK-47/ AK-74 with traditional ways may be .50 seconds slower, but will equal winning in the end every time versus a trick reload method like the Iraqi reload method.

Assassination attempt on Iraqi PM

An explosion in the protected Green Zone area located in the center of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad was allegedly an assassination attempt on the country's Prime Minister Nour al-Maliki, according to a military representative. Qassim al-Moussawi announced on Friday that the plotter managed to get a vehicle laden with around 20 kilograms of explosives into the Green Zone, then attempted to join a fleet of other vehicles into the parliamentary area. However, he was stopped at the checkpoint as he didn't have proper authority. He then drove to the parking lot and the car exploded. Officials were uncertain of the cause of the explosion at the time of the attack, but the update came after a member of an extremist group confessed to the event. The Green Zone is regarded as the most secure area in the country, housing the United States Embassy and the Iraqi parliament and homes of government officials. The incident raises grave concerns about the state of Iraq's security as the US withdraw its troops from the country. "The security violations still exist, whether the US forces are in Iraq or after they leave. I think the security violations still exist and there are political blocs behind such violations. It is impossible for a car to enter easily to such a fortified area (ie the Green Zone)," said Adel Abbas, a resident of Baghdad. A recently made public State Department cable provides evidence that US troops executed at least ten Iraqi civilians and then called in an airstrike to destroy the evidence. And autopsies performed in the Iraqi city of Tikrit showed that all the dead had been handcuffed and shot in the head. It's a gruesome tragedy and yet no one wants to pay it any attention.
