EU chokes US hooked on drugs for prison execution system

The European Union has restricted sales of drugs used in the US to execute convicts. Over 40 inmates have been killed by lethal injection in America this year alone, and supporters of the move to disrupt supplies hope it will cut that number. British MPs are staging a debate seeking the urgent renegotiation of what they see as a biased extradition treaty with the US. War cash wild as jets & bombs fail to break Gaddafi's grip

In Libya, NATO jets have attacked a government weapons depot just south-west of the capital Tripoli. It came as forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi launched a wave of attacks on rebel-held areas across the country. Fierce fighting has been reported in the the city of Misrata, the last rebel stronghold in the west. The opposition there says it's critically low on food and supplies, and warns of an imminent humanitarian crisis. But despite almost daily bombing runs, coalition jets have been unable to break Gadaffi's siege of the port-city. Security guard interrupts RT LIVE report from Domodedovo airport

The management at Russia's Domodedovo Airport is facing a criminal investigation after a suicide bomber was able to carry out a devastating attack there on Monday. President Dmitry Medvedev says it was poor attention to security which led to the blast at the country's biggest airport. The suspected suicide bomber killed 35 people and left around 180 injured. The explosion, which took place in the international arrivals area, is Russia's worst terrorist atrocity since twin bombings rocked Moscow's metro system last March. Over a hundred people caught up in the airport blast are being treated in hospitals across the capital. Report by RT' Ivor Bennet was brought to a premature end by a guard at the airport, which is operating at a heightened level of security.

Japan braced with fear, preparing for the worst

As fears of spreading radiation escalate, many are escaping Japan, leaving their homes and holiday plans behind. However, for those who stay, the future looks more than uncertain. The sheer force of the tsunami is hard to comprehend: houses and vehicles were bent at impossible angles by water power. Many of those who survived the disaster say they had never experienced such a powerful earthquake before. Journalists are not allowed along the devastated coast: the police are on high alert in the area. People are generally ready for the worst, which might hit any minute. RT correspondent Ivor Bennet, who is currently in Japan, has himself experienced what it means to be in the midst of the crisis. "Suddenly there was panic: warnings of a five-meter wall of water heading our way. We sped inland as fast as possible, chased by others," he said. "The last wave took just nine minutes after the earthquake to reach eight kilometers inland, we did not have long. This was a false alarm, but those already on their knees are bracing themselves for more." At a relief center in the city of Sendai, the newly homeless are given blankets and a cardboard sheet. All 19 floors of the building are full, with everyone from infants to the elderly. Nights spent in the center are not particularly welcoming: bitterly cold and for some, sleepless. However, for many this place may be home for weeks to come. Everyone has a story to tell about their moment of terror. "You are thinking that this is it ...

The town of Filettino has started printing its own currency

As Italian lawmakers continue to debate a 54-billion-euro austerity package, more and more people are losing faith in its efficacy. Some are even trying to introduce own currency to avoid economic woes. Italy's much-disputed austerity package to slash the country's crippling debt will go through a final debate at the lower house of Parliament on Monday. It would increase taxes and cut government spending to balance the budget by 2013. However, there is one town in Italy that has decided it does not want to wait for the cuts. The town of Filettino in the middle of the country also claims to be an independent principality. To prove it, it has even started printing its own money -- the "fiorito". The new banknotes are featuring the image of the town mayor Luca Sellari, who is now a self-proclaimed prince. "I guess everyone dreams of being a prince when they're a little boy, and so did I. Now I get to live that dream," he says. Filettino is going solo in protest over government plans to slash council funding. Rome wants small towns to merge, halving the number of local authorities. With a population of just 600, Filettino and its mayor are for the chop. "It's a terrible idea because it makes no economic sense. We have everything here to be autonomous, and besides, our neighboring towns are at least 30km away, so it's not practically possible. It wouldn't even save that much money. Most regional administrations do nothing, they should get rid of them instead," Sellari claims ...

Mass exodus from Japan amid fears of nuclear catastrophe

Amid fresh fears of nuclear contamination, inhabitants of villages and towns surrounding the Fukushima nuclear plant prepare for the worst. Some are trying to flee the country for fear of what might soon come. Residents of the Japanese city of Sendai are trying to stockpile what food is left and most shelves in local shops are already empty. The people are also getting ready to hide, fearing an invisible killer: radiation. Two explosions at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant, which occurred on Tuesday, put the country on the cusp of a nuclear meltdown. One damaged the reactor's outer casing and the final two reactors have now lost cooling capability, too. Radiation levels peaked near the plant at 400 times the amount normally absorbed in a year. There are fears radiation will spread across the country. Some fear that Japanese news outlets are not telling the whole truth. "It is the same information being broadcast on every channel," said Russian citizen in Japan, Tatyana Karpova. "You have to just guess many things, look for them in other places, because you cannot get them in the Japanese sources." "There is some very strict censorship which doesn't let us understand the true picture -- and that is not helping," she added. While residents prepare to go underground, foreign news crews are fleeing. Foreign nationals in the town are trying to escape from Niigata airport, but flights from there to Osaka and Tokyo are already fully booked for the next several days. Thus, the ...

Deadly Radiation Level At Fukushima Exceeds Norm 1600 times over!!

Work has resumed at the Fukushima power plant after it was interrupted for the second time in 24 hours. Restoration work has been underway at the facility to deal with damage caused by the tsunami. Columns of white smoke were seen hovering over two units of the facility earlier on Tuesday. Both equipment repair and restoration work have been temporarily shut at the facility, Itar-Tass news agency reports. A similar incident occurred on Monday, when restoration work was suspended due to detection of smoke over the second and third units at the facility. Fukushima workers managed to connect the first and the fourth reactors of the plant to an external power source to help restore the cooling system at the units. Five of six units of the Fukushima plant have now been connected to emergency diesel generators, Kyodo news agency reported. However, the electricity supply to the problematic third unit has yet to be switched back on. The International Atomic Energy Agency announced on Tuesday that the level of radiation within 20 kilometers from the Fukushima facility exceeds the norm 1600 times. Authorities are said to be monitoring radiation in the seawater and environment surrounding the nuclear plant. Residents of a village near the site have been supplied with bottled water after officials said tap water was contaminated. The death toll of people killed in the earthquake and tsunami that hit the country on March 11 exceeded 9000 on Tuesday, the National Police Agency said ...
