JDM: PPL (The People, Passion & Life) is a 10 minute documentary I made for my major project this semester at film school. It focuses on the topic of JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) and the distinct people and lifestyle that surrounds it. I understand that this can be a very subjective topic and many views and opinons could be widely different, so my attempt was to get 8 different people with 8 different views. Please excuse me if it feel a bit rushed, this was filmed in a 3 days course and quickly edited within 16 hours. This is a Japanese Domestic Market 1985 BJ-61 Toyota Land Cruiser with the indestructible 3B 3.4 liter 4 cylinder diesel engine and 5 speed transmission. This truck was recently imported from Japan. It is exceptionally clean, all original and in very good condition with only 92500 kilometers (57500 miles). Body/Interior: The wagon body features a rare high roof and overall is in excellent condition without any major dents, dings or rot. The clear coat is intact and the metallic blue/grey paint has retained it's luster. There are a few scratches that will easily buff out with a polisher. The interior including seats, instrument cluster and doors are all clean and in showroom condition with no signs of wear, sagging or damage (check out the pictures). The electric moon roof is working great without any leaks or problems. The tires are Bridgestone Duelers and still have tread on them. The engine and engine bay are exceptionally clean with no rust and many parts retain the original anodized plating. Check out the original factory/assembly stickers on the firewall! This truck is right hand drive, meaning the steering wheel is on the right hand side. There is some rust, but no rot on the frame. On the photos you'll see some rust bubbles starting to form on the outer lip of the wheel well. This is a common rust area on the 60-series and is easily cleaned up. Within the car and motorcycle hobbyist import scene, this term, and the related term Japanese domestic model, most commonly refer to Japanese-brand automobiles and parts designed and constructed to conform to Japanese vehicle and equipment regulations and to suit Japanese market preferences. JDM vehicles migrate to other markets through ordinary commerce and the grey market. JDM cars were limited by a jishu-kisei (gentlemen's agreement) among manufacturers to 280 horsepower (PS) (276 hp) in 1988 and a top speed of 180 or 190 km/h since the late 1970s, both imposed by JAMA, mostly due to safety concerns and the latter due to concerns regarding bōsōzoku gangs.[1] The horsepower limit was lifted in 2004.[2] However, the speed limit of 180 or 190 km/h remains in effect, depending on the make and model of vehicle. Many JDM sports cars have speedometers that only go up to 180 km/h, even though the car would be capable of much higher speeds if not for the built-in limiter. JDM vehicles often differ in features and equipment from vehicles sold elsewhere. JDM Legends is based in the outskirts of Salt Lake City, Utah, but the company's heart clearly belongs to Japan. The garage, run by shop manager Eric Bizek, is a slice of classic Japanese heaven in the middle of America. Skylines, Celicas, and 510s are parked in various states of restoration with the ultimate goal of finding new homes. Despite being happy to match classic iron to new owner, Bizek is also (and understandably) sad to see his projects leave. His love affair with these machines comes across clearly in this short film.
