Hiroo Onoda " The Last Japanese Soldier" Part_1_of_4_

Japan surrendered in 1945, ending World War II. But the war continued for another 29 years in the mind of Hiroo Onoda, a Japanese intelligence officer assigned to Lubang Island off Mindoro . When he finally emerged from the jungle in 1974 and returned to Japan , he was celebrated as a devoted soldier. Howie Severino and his I-Witness team retrace some of Onoda's steps in the rugged forest of Lubang and imagine his life in the wild. But they also discover some ugly truths about what he did to survive and persist in his mission. When the Allied Forces returned to Lubang Island in 1945, the Japanese military had no choice but to retreat. Hoping for a Japanese counterattack, Onoda and his men did everything to survive in the jungle and prepared themselves to fight till the end. Surrender was not an option. For many years since World War II, Lt. Hiroo Onoda and his three Japanese soldiers lived off the resources of the jungle and of the residents of Lubang Island -- armed with warrior instincts of survival, force and intimidation. For 29 years, going to the jungle was no easy task for the residents because somewhere in that expanse was Lt. Onoda, the lone surviving Japanese guerrilla who continued to carryout his military orders. For 29 years, some Filipino lives were lost for a war that no longer existed. Howie Severino and outdoorsman David Tajan enter the jungles of Lubang Island to retrace the trails of Lt. Onoda. How did this environment define the hero that Lt. Onoda now ...

Old Japanese soldiers recalled Nanking 南京の記憶-日本の兵士

The aim to post this clip is not to arouse hate against today's Japanese people. Friendship is always what we want. We believe today's most Japanese people support justice and love peace. But today some Japanese politicians tried to cover the truth. History is history - no body can change! The first soldier said on the way from Shanghai to Nanking, Japanese army robbed Chinese citizens of food. And this robbing was an order from their highest commander! The 2nd soldier said, also on the way from Shanghai to Nanking, there had been no virgins left - all raped by Japanese armies, then killed to eliminate evidence.

A tribute to the Japanese soldiers who fought for their country in WWII on the volcanic island, "Iwo Jima". Most people don't realize that the Japanese soldiers were humans too, they fought us for the same reason we fought them. To serve for their country! yes, they did crimes and kill people, but so did we. I' am just showing this video to tribute the soldiers who honored their country and got killed trying to, on Iwo Jima, 1945. ATTENTION: IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT I' AM NOT SUPPORTIVE OF WHAT THE JAPANESE DID IN WWII IN ANY WAY. I' AM ALSO NOT AN ANTI AMERICAN IN ANYWAY. ANY COMMENT ABOUT THAT, COMMENTS WILL BE DISABLED!! music: letters from iwo jima theme, video clips: from the movie, "letter from iwo jima"

Bugs Bunny Nips The Nips

Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips is a Merrie Melodies animated cartoon directed by Friz Freleng, produced by Leon Schlesinger Productions, and released to theaters on April 22, 1944 by Warner Bros. Pictures and The Vitaphone Corporation. The cartoon was made during World War II, and reflects the United States' attitude towards one of its main enemies at the time, the Empire of Japan. In the cartoon, Bugs Bunny lands on an island in the Pacific and is pitted against a group of highly racially-stereotyped Japanese soldiers. Bugs shows no mercy against the Japanese soldiers, greeting them with several racial slurs such as "monkey face" and "slant eyes", making short work of a large sumo wrestler, and bombing most of the Japanese army using various explosives, including grenades hidden in ice cream bars. The cartoon's title is a play on the verb "nip" as in "bite" and "Nip", a then-widely used slur for Japanese people, based on the fact that the Japanese word for "Japan" is "Nippon" (or "Nihon"). The Film Daily called the seven minute short "good fun", and gave the following synopsis: "Bugs Bunny, castaway on a Pacific isle, thinks the setting is ideal until he finds his paradise infested with Japanese soldiers. How he single-handedly exterminates the enemy makes for a laugh-filled few minutes of typical Bugs antics, off-screen remarks and action in this Technicolor cartoon produced by Leon Schlesinger." Japan's absurdity (Bushido) caused this junk & Japan's defeat

"Corporal punishment (beating)" was daily routine in Japanese army in WWII. Most modern European army abolished it, even in Soviet army. Japanese industrial overall out-put was about ¼ of Great Britain, 1/20 to the USA. Japan was still on the verge of industrial revolution. 90% of Japanese lifestyle was still hanging in medieval backwardness, such as Bushido and Male-supremacy. Japanese armed forces were wrongly over-estimated by Hitler, who knew very little about japanese history and culture. At Mongolian border (Nomonhan 1939), Zhukov smashed Japanese elite infantry, with coordinated Tanks and Infantry attack. Obviously Japan didn't learn the lesson from there. Throughout the war, Japanese Tanks were little more than toys. Japanese high command also neglected the importance of sub-machine guns, the ideal weapon in jungle warfare. Japanese ossified brains of male-dominant leaders absurdly believed that the guns were auxiliary to the sword. All officers of Japanese armed forces had to carry the cumbersome sword which has no combat value but was only symbolic stuff. Kijirō Nambu was the real war criminal. Crime of stupidity that had lead 2 millions of Japanese combat deaths. Japan went out to war with such inferior weapons, designed by Nambu, and suffered catastrophic casualties. Nambu's small arms were just pieces of junks that would eventually brought Japan the humiliating defeat. Statistically, one American soldier killed 10 to 15 Japanese soldiers at the pacific war ...

The Philippines 1941-1945

Philippines during World War II The Sack of Manila A Photo Montage by Alfredo Villanueva Music by Richard Wagner (Orchestral Prelude to Lohengrin) Comments by Fred Baldassare "For the sake of historical truth, I must comment that the destruction of Manila, which was "The Pearl of the Orient", before the war, was done in great part by US bombers and US artillery. Gen. Yamashita, unlike Gen. MacArthur in 1941, did not declare Manila an "Open City", which would have freed Manila from hostile activity. After Gen. Yamashita withdrew most of his troops to the Mountain Province, a large contingent of Japanese soldiers and sailors, and Korean marines stayed behind and defended the city, under the command of Admiral Iwabuchi. Manila had to be liberated by fighting it out, street by street, and building to building. With the American and Filipino liberators just on the other side of the Pasig River, the Japanese soldiers and sailors, and the Korean marines proceeded to go from one city block to another, burning and looting the homes, raping the women, and murdering as many citizens of Manila as they could, in biblical proportions. The Ermita, Malate, and Pasay districts were most greatly affected. The Japanese Military, in Manila, declared war on its civilian population. Conservative estimates state the the Manila Massacre, which took place in February, 1945, claimed the lives of over 111000 civilians, an estimate of 35000 more than either Nagasaki or Hiroshima. We found another cave in Saipan which was like a time capsule to the last moments in the lives of many Japanese WWII soldiers and civilians. This is actually a sink hole about 30 feet deep and 100 feet in diameter with numerous natural caves all around the edge. This cave, like most caves in Saipan, was the last stand for the Japanese soldiers and civilians and they are still in there nearly 70 years later. saipanpictures.blogspot.com

Epic WW2 (Pacific) Reenactment - Fredericksburg 2012

This is the regular Pacific Combat Zone reenactment of the Battle of Tarawa at the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, Texas. This reenactment was in March of 2012. All newsreel footage and audio accredited to Castle Films and United Newsreels. The reenactment is only a small part of a top-notch program wherein the history of the rise of the Japanese Empire is laid out and its eventual clash with the West, and all the weaponry of both sides are demonstrated and discussed in the fullest detail. If you can make it out there, be sure to visit both the Combat Zone and the excellent Museum. As with all my videos, I try to do something different from my previous work, but something that is always reverent to, and focused on, the human experience. Largely, the sound and feel of a video is instinctual, and I felt it was best and appropriate for this reenactment to be edited without music, which is also something I haven't done yet. The consequence is that the video is not as abstract and as focused on bigger ideas as are some of my other films - it is a much more literal translation. Yet, even though I have sacrificed sublimity for an admittedly much more realistic and gritty soundtrack, I nonetheless hope it is just as good and as clear a reflection of the nature of the combat that was seen in the Pacific and of the greater experiences of American, British, Australian, and Japanese soldiers alike.

Oba, The Last Samurai - 太平洋の奇跡

Oba: The Last Samurai (太平洋の奇跡-フォックスと呼ばれた男- / Taiheiyo no Kiseki: Fox to Yobareta Otoko) is a Japanese movie directed by Hideyuki Hirayama and based on an autobiographical novel co-written by former US soldier Don Jones and former Japanese solider Sakae Oba. It was released by Toho in Japan on February 11, 2011. Cast: Bengal, Mao Inoue, Sadao Abe, Takayuki Yamada, Tomoko Nakajima, Toshiaki Karasawa, Yoshinori Okada, Yutaka Takenouchi, Harlan Glenn The fall of Saipan during WWII is viewed from Japanese and American perspectives in "Oba, the Last Samurai," an engrossing portrait of Capt. Sakae Oba, whose loyalist band continued fighting for four months after hostilities officially ceased. Carefully balancing Oba's guerrilla campaign with a US officer's mission to flush out him out, this handsomely mounted pic captures the mindset of Japanese soldiers and civilians coming to terms with an unthinkable defeat. Pic opened domestically Feb. 11 in a blaze of BO glory, has grossed a robust $10 million so far, and has been sold to several offshore territories. Duplicating an approach not attempted on a big war movie since "Tora! Tora! Tora!" (1970), "Oba" was shot by two self-contained units, a potentially risky method that pays off here; Hideyuki Hirayama's Japanese-language material and co-helmer Cellin Gluck's English-lingo scenes have distinct visual and tonal personalities that are harmoniously interwoven to accentuate the story's cross-cultural themes ...

THE BEST OF BRITISH - THE LONG AND THE SHORT AND THE TALL (1961 PG b/w)

The "Best of British" season, which will continue on both itv gold channels, now features "The Long and the Short and the Tall", a highly acclaimed war drama, directed by Leslie Norman and starring Laurence Harvey, Richard Todd, Richard Harris and David McCallum. In this movie, "a troop of British soldiers are out in the jungle to record jungle noises and troop noises, so that the recordings can be played back by other troops to divert the enemy to their whereabouts. As they progress to what they think is closer to the base camp, they find themselves further and further from radio range, until the only channel they can get clearly is that of a Japanese broadcast. They then realise that they are probably only 10 to 15 miles from a Japanese camp! The tension is added to by rowdy and openly admitted "non-hero" Private Bamforth (Harvey) who has nothing good to say about anyone and especially not, Corporal Johnstone (Harris), who holds an equal dislike for Bamforth. When a Japanese soldier is taken as their prisoner, the true colours of each man comes to the surface..." Producer Michael Balcon had wanted to cast Peter O'Toole, who had played the part on stage version (by Willis Hall), in the role of Bamforth. Another actor considered was Albert Finney. However, the American backers required a "name", and Laurence Harvey was cast - and a good choice too as along with his role as Joe Lampton, this soon became one of his most acclaimed films. Modern Marvels S08E20 The Manhattan Project

The first ¾ of this film is factual and useful. However, at the end it provides the usual moral distortion currently popular about America's use of the atomic bomb to end WWII. First, the main motive for dropping the bomb was not Russia but American casualties. The American leadership was not indifferent to the spread of Soviet domination. However, at the time of decision the battle of Okinawa was still going on and Truman was looking at casualty reports of 5000 a week and had been seeing those reports for weeks. In all, there were over 72000 American casualties in this battle. So high was the casualty rate that congress called for an investigation. Over 200000 Japanese died on Okinawa. It is not known how many were wounded. Over 30 American ships were sunk and 164 were damaged. By comparison, only 9 ships were sunk and 14 damaged at Pearl Harbor. Several thousand American and Japanese aircraft were lost, far more than were lost in the Battle of Britain. In fact, more aircraft were lost at Okinawa than the entire June, 1940 combat strength of the RAF and Luftwaffe combined. Thus, the small island of Okinawa was one of the largest battles of World War II. It was estimated that there would be up to 1000000 American casualties if we had to invade and conquer Japan. Japanese casualties were estimated to be ten times higher. So many Purple Heart Medals were manufactured in anticipation of the casualties from the invasion that to this day wounded soldiers are awarded Purple ...
