Rare footage of Heifetz at the height of his career. This is the introduction to the "Heifetz & Piatigorsky" DVD produced by KULTUR. Most of the Heifetz footage from that DVD (Paganini Caprice, Wieniawski, etc.) have already been posted so this is for those who are really interested in learning more about this great violinist.

Jascha Heifetz plays La Fille Aux Cheveux De Lin (The Girl with the Flaxen Hair), No. 8 of Preludes, Book I, by Debussy. Acompanist: Emanuel Bay I have another video of Heifetz playing this piece, but that's when he was around 70 years old, and it can be found here: www.youtube.com Personally, I think this is the most beautiful and touching performance of Heifetz ever recorded.

(Very Rare!!) Jascha Heifetz (age 11!) - Mozart 'Gavotte in G' from 'Idomeneo' (1912)

Jascha Heifetz, at the age of 11 (!), plays Mozart's Gavotte in G from 'Idomeneo', transcribed for violin by Leopold Auer. Recorded on a wax cylinder for Julius Block, on November 4th, 1912, at the Block's estate in Grunewald, Germany. This is not the first recording of Heifetz (he made some discs in 1910 for a small Russian record company), but the sound quality is much better than those 1910 recordings. The Recording is very well-recorded, although the surface noise is really terrible. Maybe Block was simply 'addicted' to this performance of the child prodigy and played in over and over until the cylinder got so worn out like this. After the performance is over, Heifetz says something in Russian or German (I think it's German, although it's very difficult to understand), if there is anyone who can understand the words, please make comments. You can get more information about Julius Block and his wonderful collection of cylinder recordings which he made from 1890 to 1927 at Marston Records website (www.marstonrecords.com). I also uploaded another Block cylinder, the voices of Tchaikowski and Rubinstein, on my channel. Many thanks to Ward Marston for allowing us to enjoy these treasures from almost two century ago. ******************************************************** The video is uploaded for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Jascha Heifetz - Hebrew Melody (1917)

Jascha Heifetz plays Joseph Achron's 'Hebrew Melody' for Victor in 1917. This was one of Heifetz's earliest commercial recording session. He was only 17(!) years old when he recorded this. The vibrato is just fantastic, and the performance itself is full of emotion. This record was belonged to my great-grandfather, who loved this record so much that he played this over and over again until the record was heavily worn out like this. So the sound quality is really TERRIBLE, but I hope you can understand it. Played on my Numark machine.

Jascha Heifetz: God's Fiddler

Not since Paganini had there been such a magician on the violin. We see never-seen-before vintage filmed performance clips and home movies of Jascha Heifetz and learn that he was the first truly modern violin virtuoso, the man about whom Itzhak Perlman said, "When I spoke with him, I thought, 'I can't believe I'm talking with God'." This film portrays an artist for whom only perfection would do. A musical ‚wunderkind' who went on to set the standards for nearly a century. We get to know through home movies and personal family photos taken from 1903-1987, a prestigious concert artist so well known in popular culture, his name became a shorthand for greatness, for everyone from Jack Benny to The Muppets to Woody Allen. Filmed in Vilna, Lithuania, Saint Petersburg, Russia, and in the Heifetz Studio in Los Angeles, this documentary re-creates a life that spanned the 20th Century, a life that both influenced the period, and was affected by its turbulent times. We hear from all the great violinists of his generation, and from many of his former students who are still alive, that Heifetz was a legendary but mysterious figure whose story embodies the dual nature of artistic genius: the paradox of how a mortal man lives with immortal gifts -- gifts he must honor, but which extract a life long price. Is the man and the artist the same person? What is the price each pays? And who was the man behind the music?
Jascha Heifetz Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso (from They Shall Have Music) - at correct pitch

Jascha Heifetz plays Saint-Saëns Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso from the 1939 film "They Shall Have Music". (Other versions of this clip exist on youtube but all the ones I could find had the pitch raised almost 1/2 step, and as this is likely among the greatest performances of this piece of all time, I wanted to make a correct version is available!)
