JUDY GARLAND & JOHNNY MERCER, 'THE DREAMS ON ME'. A LOVE AFFAIR.

A brief video clip from 'Clint Eastwood Presents Johnny Mercer: The Dreams On Me'. Judy & Johnny shared a relationship for over 30 years ... She was, in every sense of the word, his Muse ... inspiring his love & creativity. In Greek mythology, the Muses inspired the creation of music, poetry & literature. Judy wrote poetry. She sang songs. She told stories. With these gifts, she created the POWER TO INSPIRE. Shakespeare wrote: "Be thou the tenth Muse, ten times more in worth than those old nine ..." Judy is ten times more in worth. Johnny Mercer knew this, & wrote a song for her 'I Remember You'. "I wrote it for Judy Garland. I always had such a crush on Garland I couldnt think straight, so I wrote this song." Savannah Georgia born man-of-music Johnny Mercer is a recognized composer-lyricist, a vocalist, and a star-discoverer. Mercer won four Academy Awards for his 'Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe', 'In The Cool, Cool, Cool Of The Evening', 'Moon River', and 'Days Of Wine And Roses'.This bard of Tin Pan Alley wrote his first song at fifteen years old, and in the years since he composed more than 1500 songs with more than 750 published, and scored hits with nearly 100. Admired and praised by the likes of Irving Berlin and Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer has been described as one of our great folk poets and the most perfect American lyricist. Throughout his extraordinary career, he collaborated with hundreds of composers. Mercer then went on to co-found Capitol Records in 1942 and ...

Johnny Mercer Tribute - Come Rain Or Come Shine

Filmed & Edited by New York City actor turned filmmaker Michael Stever, It's almost impossible to go a day without hearing a Johnny Mercer song. Tunes like "Moon River," "Blues In The Night," and That Old Black Magic" are woven into the fabric of American life. He wrote more than 1500 songs in a career that spanned nearly fifty years. His work appeared in over 90 films and he was nominated for eighteen Academy Awards, winning four. Mercer wrote six Broadway shows, and was himself a top radio personality and recording artist. He co-founded Capitol Records, and nurtured the talents of musical legends such as Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra, and Nat King Cole. In celebrating songwriter Johnny Mercers 100th birthday, COME RAIN OR COME SHINE musically applauds the writers Southern gumption, timeless appeal, Gatsby style, creative inspiration,Huckleberry Friend affability, and charming songs in a slick, yet comfortably impromptu cabaret revue. The COME RAIN OR COME SHINE cast includes Klea Blackhurst (Time Out New York Special Achievement Award: Everything The Traffic Will Allow), Jim Caruso (six-time MAC Award Winner & Liza's At The Palace), Christine Ebersole (Tony Awards: Grey Gardens & 42nd Street), Billy Stritch (Grammy: Does He Love You? and two Grammy nominations for Liza Minnelli's Gently cd) and award-winning jazz violinist Aaron Weinstein.

DARYL SHERMAN / WYCLIFFE GORDON Honor JOHNNY MERCER

Miss Sherman, that gifted singer and pianist, has been performing a tribute to Johnny Mercer on Monday nights at the Oak Room of the Algonquin Hotel in New York City. On June 8, 2009, I captured her and her able colleagues -- that's Wycliffe Gordon on trombone and vocal, James Chirillo on guitar, and Boots Maleson on bass -- performing one of my favorite Mercer songs, THE BATHTUB RAN OVER AGAIN, a sweetly tender love song about what romantic ardor can do to the neighbors downstairs. (Daryl and Wycliffe do this song on Daryl's new Arbors CD, which is -- of course! -- a tribute to Mercer, who would have turned 100 this year Recorded by Michael Steinman. Peggy Lee / Johnny Mercer: The Freedom Train (Berlin) - Performed September 12, 1947 - Lyrics

At 1:36 the singers identify themselves in this order: "Johnny Mercer, Peggy Lee, Benny Goodman, Margaret Whiting, the Pipers and the Weston Band" (ie, the Pied Pipers & Paul Weston's Orchestra). Benny Goodman comes in with his clarinet at 2:05. This recording was made on September 12, 1947. (More information and pictures here: www.lincoln-highway-museum.org ) From the CD, "Peggy Lee: The Lost 40s and 50s Capitol Masters." From Wikipedia: The 1947--1949 Freedom Train was proposed by Attorney General Tom C. Clark as a way to reawaken Americans to their taken-for-granted principles of liberty in the post-war years. The idea soon got the approval of President Harry S. Truman and everything else fell into place. Top Marines were selected to attend to the train and its famous documents; the Marine contingent was led by Col. Robert F. Scott. The train carried the original versions of the United States Constitution, Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights on its tour of more than 300 cities in all 48 states. As Alaska and Hawaii did not gain statehood until 1959, this train toured all of the US States that existed at the time. It was the first train to visit all 48 contiguous states (the 1936 Rexall Train had come close, but missed Nevada). (More information here: en.wikipedia.org ) Berlin started writing this song on Tuesday, May 22, 1947, and completed it that following weekend. On the Tuesday following the weekend, Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters recorded it ...

Johnny Mercer & the Pied Pipers - Winter Wonderland (1946)

"Winter Wonderland" is a winter song, popularly treated as a Christmas time pop standard, written in 1934 by Felix Bernard (composer) and Richard B. Smith (lyricist). Richard was reportedly inspired to write the song after seeing Honesdale's Central Park covered in snow. Mr. Smith had written the lyrics while in the West Mountain Sanitarium, being treated for tuberculosis. The original recording was by Richard Himber and his Hotel Ritz-Carlton Orchestra on RCA Bluebird in 1934. At the end of a recording session with time to spare, it was suggested that this new tune be tried with an arrangement provided by the publisher. This excellent "studio" orchestra included many great New York studio musicians including the legendary Artie Shaw. Due to its seasonal theme, "Winter Wonderland" is often regarded as a Christmas song in the Northern Hemisphere, although the holiday itself is never mentioned in the lyrics. There is a mention of "sleigh-bells" several times, implying that this song refers to the Christmas period. Parson Brown The bridge of the song contains the following lyrics: "In the meadow we can build a snowman, then pretend that he is Parson Brown. He'll say 'Are You Married?' We'll say 'No man, but you can do the job when you're in town!" In the period when this song was written, parsons (now known as Protestant ministers) often traveled among small rural towns to perform wedding ceremonies for denominational followers who did not have a local minister of their own ...

I felt totally united with the song. In fact, this recording gave me the idea to my original "I AM SONG". I was absolutely taken by singing "Moon River" and kept singing it all day. Never have I felt so comfortable with a song. In the end, I had numerous recordings and all of them are close to me. This is the one, where I firstly felt like not only singing, but being the song. And it´s also due to the magnificent playing of Lucamadeus. So sensitive and just beautiful. Here´s his channel: www.youtube.com Grazie a te, Luca. It was a marvellous experience to me. And that´s why I´ve hesitated to publish the song. I´ve recorded it half a year ago in my "pre-hat-phase". I was having tears in my eyes all the time and thought, maybe this is too private. But I´m here to share my joy of singing and so here are tears and tones of joy. André :-) PS.
