1941 Jonava Captured

July 9, 1941. Deutsche Wochenschau No. 566. Panzers advance along the road to Jonava - a hotly contested town in southern Lithuania. Assault guns bombard strong enemy defensive positions. An anti-tank gun goes into action. Field artillery places distant targets under fire. Entire portions of Jonava are already in flames. But the enemy tenaciosly defends their positions. The town is outflanked and the enemy defense is impeded by this operation. The Soviet attack is broken by German infantry guns. Step by step our troops fight their way towards Jonava. The enemy lurks in every street and in every house. Resistance is finally broken. Joanava is in German hands. It is a scene of destruction. What was not destroyed in the battle was levelled by the Soviets upon their retreat.
