Foreign journalists killed in Homs shelling

Two foreign journalists have been killed in Homs, activists say, as shelling of a district of the Syrian city continued amid warnings of an escalating humanitarian crisis. Omar Shakir, an activist in the city, told Al Jazeera that the deaths of Marie Colvin, a US reporter working for the UK's Sunday Times newspaper, and French photographer Remi Ochlik occurred as a building used by activists as a media centre was shelled on Wednesday. Al Jazeera's Laurence Lee reports.

Mike Wallace's Death Spurs Wave of Journalist Elegies

Famed 60 Minutes anchor Mike Wallace died this past weekend at the age of 93. During a seven-decade career that started in radio and moved into broadcast television, Wallace gained a reputation for a confrontational interview style that skewered athletes, celebrities, and political leaders alike. His most memorable interviews included talks with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, an at times heated sit-down with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and this [[link?]] 1979 interview with the Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran. Wallace?s tenacity as a reporter and interviewer made him one of the most recognizable and successful personalities in hard-hitting TV journalism, even when he reportedly missed his mark. He was portrayed in 1999 film The Insider as buckling under corporate pressure to kill a story about a big tobacco whistleblower. Journalists around the world are still tipping their hats to the tireless interviewer, but Ann Curry?s tweet summed up his passing better than many could: ?Tough questions are being asked in heaven today. RIP Mike Wallace."

Why Is President Obama Keeping a Journalist in Prison in Yemen?

Via Jeremy Scahill of The Nation: "On February 2, 2011, President Obama called Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The two discussed counterterrorism cooperation and the battle against Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. At the end of the call, according to a White House read-out, Obama "expressed concern" over the release of a man named Abdulelah Haider Shaye, whom Obama said "had been sentenced to five years in prison for his association with AQAP." It turned out that Shaye had not yet been released at the time of the call, but Saleh did have a pardon for him prepared and was ready to sign it. It would not have been unusual for the White House to express concern about Yemen's allowing AQAP suspects to go free. Suspicious prison breaks of Islamist militants in Yemen had been a regular occurrence over the past decade, and Saleh has been known to exploit the threat of terrorism to leverage counterterrorism dollars from the United States. But this case was different. Abdulelah Haider Shaye is not an Islamist militant or an Al Qaeda operative. He is a journalist...".* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down. *Read the full piece: www.thenation.com Subscribe to The Young Turks: bit.ly Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com The Largest Online New Show in the World. Journalist,Faith Laugier- attacked, assaulted and arrested by NYPD: The Shamar Report

Faith Laugier is a Journalist/Radio show host and personal friend of mine. Today, 11-17-11, she was indiscriminately grabbed from the crowd while moving away from the chaos, as instructed to do by NYPD. At the very start of this video you can see a police officer rush her from behind and body slam her to the pavement. Handcuffs were then placed on her in such a way that caused the veins in her arms to erect. Officers refused to loosen her cuffs as well as explain why she was being detained. Also, several times in the midst of my filming and photographing her arrest several police officers attempted to swat and take my camera from me. At one point an officer shouted, "grab that man",me. I was able to remain safe.

War on whistleblowers turning into the war on journalists?

The war on whistleblowers in the US continues. The Obama administration is going after yet another whistleblower. John Kiriakou, a former official for the CIA, was indicted on Thursday for leaking information out to the press. Kiriakou is no stranger to whistleblowing and was responsible for leaking the torture technique of waterboarding by the CIA on terror suspects. Jesselyn Radack from the Government Accountability Project joins us for more on the latest indictment and gives us her take on how the war on whistleblowers is turning into the war on journalists. #D12: NYPD aggression turns a peaceful dance party into a police riot (Part 1)

Watch as NYPD officers violently and stupidly arrest 17 members of a peaceful and happy gathering in the WFC's Winter Garden, courtesy Brookfield Properties. In this video, you can see at least two journalists arrested with no clear pretext. According to @johnknefel, who's arrested at 6:31 in the video, 8 in 10 people in his paddy wagon were arrested with cameras. Also, @justinwedes, who contributes to @OccupyWallStNYC, is arrested just past the 10:00 mark. In both cases you can clearly see the police initiate aggression towards the cameramen. They're both pushed to the ground and cuffed. The moment where @justinwedes is arrested is horrifyingly dangerous: you can see members of the NYPD shoving people down a staircase. This is the kind of reckless misconduct that can get people seriously hurt. 15 others were arrested, including at least 6 other journalists including @dontbeaputz and @OWS_Live. If you know any of the other citizen journalists who were arrested, please let me know. When will Ray Kelly answer for his department's sickeningly routine violations of the civil rights of the people of New York City? When will Mayor Bloomberg be held accountable for his orders and his duplicity? Where does the buck stop? diceytroop.tumblr.com - More #OWS coverage there. And, though I am happy to provide reportage for all with no expectation of compensation, please consider helping me sustain my efforts! Cheers.

Reporting supported by the Center is found in diverse media -- from The Washington Post to The Washington Times, from Al Jazeera English to PBS NewsHour, from YouTube to interactive web presentations. Syrian 'Citizen Journalists' Use Social Media to Spread News

This is the VOA Special English Technology Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Social media networks have come to play an important part in the political unrest in Syria. The Syrian government barred most media from the country after the unrest began a year ago. But that has not stopped Syrians from getting out information to the rest of the world. Many Syrians have turned to social media like YouTube, Facebook and Twitter to help spread reports about what is happening in the country. Hundreds, possibly thousands of videos have appeared on YouTube and other social media sites in the past few weeks. With few foreign reporters in Syria, social media have become a major tool for telling the world what is happening. Many news organizations have had to depend on reports and videos from people they call citizen journalists.Emanuelle Esposti is a blogger in Britain who has been studying the use of such videos by foreign media. She says it is very difficult to know where a video has actually come from or who made it or why. In early March Syria's deputy oil minister resigned to join the opposition. In a video on YouTube, Abdo Husameddine had a message for the government of President Bashar al-Assad. He said it had, in his words, "brought a year of sadness and misery to those you claim to be your people." He also said the government had deprived its people of basic needs and humanity and brought the country to the edge of disaster.Abdo Husameddine was the highest official to ...

OUTFOXED Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism Interviews Video

Creative Commons license: Sampling Plus. This is the original footage from the documentary Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism, produced and directed by Robert Greenwald. The film, which has drawn attention for its pointed critique of Fox News, consists largely of interviews with former Fox employees and news guests. Greenwald said, "In making Outfoxed, I learned how cumbersome and expensive it can be to license footage from news organizations. The Creative Commons license, as used here, allows me as a filmmaker to know immediately how I can use a piece of content in my films. I could think of no better way to walk the talk myself than by releasing the interviews from Outfoxed here under a license that allows other filmmakers to use my material in new and creative ways. I look forward to seeing what others do with these interviews." Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism is a 2004 documentary film by progressive filmmaker Robert Greenwald that is highly critical of the Fox News Channel, and its owner, Rupert Murdoch, claiming that the channel is used to promote and advocate right-wing views. The film says this pervasive bias contradicts the channel's claim of being "Fair and Balanced", and argues that Fox News has been engaging in what amounts to consumer fraud. The documentary was not released theatrically, but rather was distributed in DVD format by the progressive Political action committee MoveOn.org, and sold online through Internet retailers such as ...

Coogan told him: "I think you are a walking PR disaster for the tabloids because you don't come across in a sympathetic way." "Your come across as a risible individual." Greg Dyke said: "You are absolutely nothing to do with a decent press and a free democracy." McMullen attempted to fight back, asking Coogan how many "Murdoch movies" he had appeared in, claiming that the actor had a publicist who spent their time trying to get Coogan in the press. He said: "You spend your time trying to get in the press. How many Murdoch movies have you been in? You take five million quid a movie and then you bleet on." Chris Hedges Sues Obama Admin Over Indefinite Detention of US Citizens Approved in NDAA

www.democracynow.org - Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges has filed suit against President Obama and Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta to challenge the legality of the National Defense Authorization Act, which includes controversial provisions authorizing the military to jail anyone it considers a terrorism suspect anywhere in the world, without charge or trial. Sections of the bill are written so broadly that critics say they could encompass journalists who report on terror-related issues, such as Hedges, for supporting enemy forces. "It is clearly unconstitutional," Hedges says of the bill. "It is a huge and egregious assault against our democracy. It overturns over 200 years of law, which has kept the military out of domestic policing." We speak with Hedges, now a senior fellow at the Nation Institute, and former New York Times foreign correspondent who was part of a team of reporters that was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2002 for the paper's coverage of global terrorism. We are also joined by Hedges' attorney Carl Mayer, who filed the litigation on his behalf in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.
