Among 96 dead were the President of Poland, the First Lady, top generals of the Polish Armed Forces and NATO, members of the Parliament, top government officials, members of the clergy, anti-communist leaders, and families of the victims of the 1940 Katyn crime. Two years after the crash it is evident that the investigation of the Smolensk crash by the Russian government was conducted in gross violation of international standards and led to the destruction and suppression of key evidence. The Russian conclusion of the pilot error as the cause of the crash is false and invalid and it was predetermined to serve Russia's political interests. Polish Community appealed to the public and Canadian Government for support in establishing a fair and impartial international investigation into the Smolensk crash. Lech Kaczynski and another 96 passengers died in a plane crash on their way to ceremonies in Katyn marking the 70th anniversary of the Soviet-era massacre of thousands of Polish officers.Among the dead is Andrzej Skapski, who recently appeared in a 'European Journal' report. When Andrzej Skapski was 2 years old, his father was arrested by the Soviets. When mass graves were discovered in Katyn in 1943, Andrzej's father was one of the victims to be identified. The Katyn massacre, also known as the Katyn Forest massacre (Polish: zbrodnia katyńska, mord katyński, 'Katyń crime'; Russian: Катынский расстрел), was a mass murder[1] of Polish nationals carried out by the Soviet secret police NKVD in April--May 1940. It was based on Lavrentiy Beria's proposal to execute all members of the Polish Officer Corps, dated 5 March 1940.
