KMJQ scoped aircheck. KLYX 102.1 FM signed on in 1970 as ABC news. In 1977 KMJQ became Houston Texas first Adult/Urban Contemporary formatted station on the FM dial. Majic 102 "Playing All your Favorites". In 1991 the format changed to Majic 102Jamz then dropped the Majic moniker in 1992 appealling to a younger audience and going head to head with the "new" 97.9 The Box at the time owned by Bad Boy Entertainment "Puff-Daddy" For your Urban AC choice it was Y-98.5 "The Best Variety of Hits and Dusties" owned by 102.1 at the time. When Y-98.5 flipped to Smooth Jazz formatted Smooth-FM and Clear Channel aquired KHYS and KJOJ FM in 1995 102jamz flipped back to Majic 102 "The Majic is Back" as Urban Adult Contemporary which remains today.

KHYS/KJOJ is a now defunct FM station in Houston Texas serving the Port Arthur and Freeport Areas. This was a demo tape given to me in 1995 when the station just flipped from Urban Adult Contemporary to Smooth Jazz. This was Houston's second attempt at smooth jazz, the first attempt was on 106.9 KZJS before they flipped to KKHU You 106.9. KJOJ FM 103.3 was once owned by Jimmy Swaggert Ministries as the Calls stand for Joy Of Jesus, Swaggert divested KJOJ-FM to Evergreen which at the time owned the following stations KMJQ, KYOK, and KHYS. The Smooth Fm tenure was under Clear Channel Radio this particular station was sold numerous times and the longest running format on it is it's current format La Raza under the ownership of Liberman Broadcasting which owns 700 KSEV and a handful of other stations in the Houston market.
