J. Heifetz Plays "Sabre Dance" (Khachaturian)

Aram Khachaturian: Sabre Dance (Final Act of Gayane) Transcribed by Jascha Heifetz Violin: Jascha Heifetz. Notes from MK, Sinfoniette. -Recently, I downloaded the complete Heifetz set by Torrent. It took me 3 days, and it was 64 cds or so. I was looking at his encores and others, and thought the only thing Heifetz didnt play was the Khachaturian and the Saint Saens concerto. He played the Elgar, Conus, Wieianski, the famous concertos, Bruch 2, Walton, Rosza and insanely many short pieces. However, I was starting to get dismayed because I love Khachaturian, and there was no Khachaturian music in there; I really didnt expect it to be in there, but hey, there was the Elgar and the Conus and the Rosza and the Bruch No. 2. Why not the Khachaturian? But I found this hidden little gem. I like it as much as I love the Khachaturian. And I think the general public might love this one more than the Tchaikovsky. Enjoy! MK

Khachaturian - Andantino

This is a short piece, full of beauty and nostalgy. I imagine it in the world of the childhood, as a sorrow, as little children can have, not so important, but for them, so important...The theme begins with 2 descending notes on the right hand, and tells a short intimate story. This story changes at 1 min 10", with these 2 notes, but ascending this time, with a dancing rythm, not completely joyfull, not completely sad, between the two. I like the mix of these two emotions, because in life, this is what happens many times. At the very end, the piece ends with these 2 notes played this time together, as a unification of these two emotions. For me it is as the sound of a bell-glass, with a bit of humour, as a wink. After all, this sorrow was not so serious... Hiram NB: For a better listening experience, add &fmt=18 at the end of the video URL(top of the page) and reload the page. This will cause the sound track to be played back in stereo and cd quality and the image resolution to be quite better.

Simonyan plays Khachaturian's Violin Concerto

www.deutschegrammophon.com Watch Mikhail Simonyan play the last movement of Khachaturian's Violin Concerto recorded for "Two souls". This unusual coupling of the violin concertos by Aram Khachaturian and Samuel Barber is tailor-made for Mikhail Simonyan's Deutsche Grammophon debut. One soul is Armenian, the other American. Born in Novosibirsk, Simonyan has mixed Russian and Armenian parentage, but spent his formative years in the US. When he was 13, he toured the US as soloist with the American Russian Young Artists Orchestra; soon afterwards he moved to America and entered the Curtis Music Institute in Philadelphia. Simonyan's close rapport with Kristjan Järvi and his first collaboration with one of the world's best orchestras, the London Symphony Orchestra, produce an extraordinarily fresh reading of the two concertos: "I've known Kristjan for 12 years -- he was at my very first concert at Lincoln Center," says Simonyan, "and we have performed many times together since then. If you share the same musical ideas, the interpretation becomes a completely different proposition. We opened the musical scores of these concertos and felt totally free." About the Barber concerto, Simonyan adds: "It's simply one of the most beautiful pieces in the string repertoire". He performs the work with a perfect American accent that evokes images of this vast country. The recording renders the quality of both concertos in an unprecedented way. It can be confidently expected that the ears of ...

Leonid Jacobson, the choreographer of the celebrated Leningrad premiere of 1956 in the Kirov Theatre, had already shortened, changed and altered the score and the dramaturgy and commissioned the composer to compose a range of new numbers or change existing ones according to the needs of the choreography. Today Spartacus is generally known in the version of Yuri Grigorovich, who, in his effort to push back the pantomime and return the dance to the fore also made deep changes to the score. The success of Grigorovich's choreography, first played at the Bolshoi Theatre in 1968, is in no small part down to the spectacular battle scenes and the two virtuoso leading male roles, here embodied through Irek Mukhamedov (Dancer of the Year 1992 chosen by Dance and Dancers and Independent On Sunday, the Gino Tani Dance Award 1992 in Italy, Nijinsky Medal 1998, OBE in the New Years Honours List 2000) and Aleksandr Vetrov. Vanessa Mae - 'The Sabre Dance' by Aram Khachaturian

Vanessa Mae - The Sabre Dance' by Aram Khachaturian (video) The Saber Dance (Armenian: Սուսերով Պար) is a movement in the final act of the Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian's ballet Gayane, completed in 1942. It evokes a whirling war dance in an Armenian dance, where the dancers display their skill with sabers. Due to its exceptionally exciting rhythm, "The Saber Dance" established a place for itself in common concert practice, leading also to various adaptations in popular music. In its middle section it uses an Armenian folk song from Gyumri, Armenia. *** Vanessa-Mae, born 27 October 1978, coincidentally shares her birthday with famed violinist Niccolò Paganini, who was born 196 years earlier on 27 October 1782. Vanessa-Mae began playing piano at the age of three and violin at five. She was particularly famous in the United Kingdom throughout her childhood making regular appearances on television (for example on Blue Peter) mostly involving classical music and conservative style. According to Guinness World Records, she is the youngest soloist to record both the Beethoven and Tchaikovsky violin concertos, a feat she accomplished at the age of thirteen.[1] During this time she attended the Francis Holland School in central London. Vanessa-Mae made her international professional debut at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival in Germany in 1988, and also during 1988 made her concerto debut on stage with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London. Moiseiwitsch plays Khachaturian / Levant "Sabre Dance"

Khachaturian Sabre Dance from Gayane ballet , transcribed for piano by Oscar Levant, recorded in 1948. ~~~ After a stay in Yerevan, Armenia in 1939, Khachaturian composed the ballet "Happiness". Using material from this ballet, Khachaturian radically rewrote it, thereby creating the ballet, Gayane (or spelled as Gayne, Gayaneh, Gayané) in 1942 in Molotov, after USSR entered World War II. Some aspects of the ballet hint to political and patriotic issues regarding the war. During this time, Soviet literature and art contributed greatly to the Soviet people's Great Patriotic War. In 1943, Khachaturian joined the Communist Party whose ideals he had long been expounding as a musician. In his own words : "Soviet songs are a fighting weapon and it is our duty to forge this weapon with all the passion, responsibility, knowledge, and talent at our disposal. We shall give the front songs throbbing with wrath and fury, songs of revenge, songs of victory, and songs of glory worthy of our Soviet soldiers." Gayane is based on the story of a heroine named Gayane. The setting for the play is on a cotton farm in Armenia. Gayane is married to Giko, who maltreats her. Gayane denounces her husband, the Red Army eventually arrests Giko and he is later imprisoned. Because of this, Gayane could end her marriage with Giko and she later marries Kasakov; their wedding provides the happy ending, the climax of which is the "Sabre Dance". ~~~ Quoting Oscar Levant: - Happiness isn't something you ...

Aram Khachaturian's "Lullaby"

KHACHATURIAN'S LULLABY - Frank J. Cunningham Sleep, sleep away young child Twist and turn in the dark - Dream lightly on. I relate our tale of woe, woe in all it's depth of saddening loss. The madness so long endured The waste of youth demanded Mother's grief handed down Creeping of seasons past seasons. Hush, Hush, Wake not......sleep, sleep. Invaders came through the ages Plundered, Ravaged, Destroyed. On and on cross centuries come screams of nothingness - Blowing o'er our trampled lives. Then the greatest trial of all -- Words fail me to describe the horror So, so many lost in that long, long march - Of brutal life or death. We mouth the past in our native tongue Let loose yearnings for those now gone We, the flickering emblems of our race Hold fast our culture, long, in music, words and dance. Pummeled, Squashed again yet again Near to obliteration Still, always, some sparks...a glow - Where burns the hope. Devastated, Broken, Rebuilt, Smashed Countless times, Empire after Empire Must we ...To what end - Bent in servitude. Beyond reason I exist Lost in red haze of blood and rage Blinded by tears This orgy of humanity History I tread, ours and others To thrive on knowing We are not alone -- The scythe's edge dulls. Hark the deafening sighs, who's listening. Walk the villages of tears, who's weeping. I sing you words of ours that caress our ways. Now is my piece of happiness recalling greater days - As you grow in slumber. This great treasure of lore, though laced with ...
