Kuala Lumpur: Petronas Twin Towers

Im in Kuala Lumpur for three days on business and so time to squeeze in the local landmarks. The first stop on any sightseeing expedition here has to be the dramatic Petronas Twin Towers, one of the most famous skyscrapers in the world and very handily less than a ten minute walk from the guest house where I am staying for a couple of nights. Its acres of steel shine in the daytime sunlight and are floodlit spectacularly at night meaning that you can see the towers from almost anywhere in the city; they are the focal point that the city's hub revolves around. To get to them a map is barely necessary, you just point in their direction and they guide you. When it opened in 1998 the Petronas Twin Towers, with 88 floors, was the tallest building in the world, a few metres higher than the famous Empire State Building. The skyscraper certainly did its job: it put the city on the global map and turned state petroleum company, Petronas, into a household name. Six years later Tapei 101 took over its mantle as it was just over 50 metres higher, and since then the Sears/Willis Tower in Chicago arrived on the skyscraper scene it is almost equally as tall before the 160 floor Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which has just officially opened, shattered the established order with an unmatchable height of 828 metres. However for sheer visual appeal and global recognition, the Petronas Twin Towers, already immortalized in a Hollywood movie, is arguably still the most famous skyscraper in the world ...

Kuala Lumpur: KL Monorail (I)

The busy arteries of Kuala Lumpur are kept moving by an impressive public transport infrastructure which includes an array of modern metro rail systems that dissect the citys map, join the dots, and make the urban journey from A to B as swift and manageable as possible. Of the bunch probably the most visually interesting is the KL Monorail which twists and turns its way through the city on twin parallel elevated tracks. It has 11 stations along its 8.6 km length and starts at KL Sentral, the citys main railway station and undisputed public transport hub, before thrusting its way into what is known locally as the Golden Triangle, an array of shopping centres, hotels and commercial skyscrapers in the northeast of the city bordered by three key roads: Jalan Imbi, Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Raja Chulanits. The monorail planners aim has been to link up several densely-populated areas that had previously been lacking in access to urban transport and four of its stations smoothly integrate with other rail systems in the city. Work on the KL Monorail started in 1997, and it opened to the public in mid-2003. The ten two-car trains that ply the route, each of which is lavishly decorated in the colours of a different sponsor, were built in Malaysia and can carry up squeeze in 158 passengers in total, with traffic levels reportedly now kicking in at over 20 million journeys a year. It first glance it looks a bit dainty, overshadowed by a thrusting and unyielding metropolis that ...

PLEASE WATCH IN 720pHD WITH LARGE PLAYER/FULLSCREEN OR ON YOUR HDTV FOR THE BEST POSSIBLE QUALITY! I didn't have much time while i was in Malaysia, as i was about to meet my sister for her holiday in Thailand. Most of the time i did have was spend in the hotel, because i got pretty sick in Kuala Lumpur. Unfortunately i wasn't able to get the capital by night, but who knows, Taman Negara and The Perhentian Islands are still out there waiting to be captured, i'm sure i'll be able to fit KL into my next trip to Malaysia! Info: Panasonic HDC-TM900 Video: H.264 720p @ 50fps (dropped to 25fps by youtube) Audio: AAC Stereo @ 384kbps I traveled through Asia for a year in 2010/2011, during this time I recorded almost everything I came across and created videos for the most memorable places. For me this was a good way to re-enjoy my travels later in life as I never had a feel for taking photos. All videos were created during the trip within a week or two of visiting a place. I learned a lot along the way so i'm improving most of them to the highest possible quality. Enhanced color-correction, image stabilization, constant quality encoding, etc... Unfortunately Youtube doesn't support 50 frames per second, so you'll have to do with 25, sorry! Anyway, enjoy and let me know what you think!

More than 80000 participated in Bersih 3.0 rally at KL - 28Apr2012

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian police fired teargas and water cannons on Saturday as thousands of protesters took to the streets of the capital to demand sweeping electoral reforms ahead of widely expected polls. Tens of thousands had massed for a march to Merdeka Square (Independence Square) in central Kuala Lumpur despite a lockdown on the area and a court order banning public assemblies there. But the otherwise peaceful rally was disrupted when hundreds of protesters angry at being denied access to the square trampled razor wire and pushed aside barricades to pour in, where they were met with teargas and chemical-laced water. The fracas marked the second straight year that police clashed with a pro-democracy rally organised by the election reform pressure group Bersih. A protest march last year was crushed by police and 1600 people arrested. Bersih and the political opposition are demanding far-reaching reforms by Prime Minister Najib Razak to end what they say has been decades of manipulation by the ruling coalition aimed at keeping itself in power. "The message we are sending to Najib is that we must have clean elections!" opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim shouted to a crowd just before the clashes began. Bersih demands a thorough vetting of the voter roll following revelations of widespread phantom or duplicate voter registrations, a complete overhaul of the national Election Commission, which it accuses of bias, and other reforms. Last year's harsh response to the rally ...
