Russian Red Army Choir - Kalinka

Russian Red Army Choir - Kalinka. "Kalinka" might be the best-known Russian song of all time. It has been mistaken as being a genuine folksong, but was actually written in 1860 by the composer and folklorist Ivan Petrovich Larionov and first performed in Saratov as part of a theatrical entertainment that he had composed. Soon it was added to the repertory of a folk choral group. The song celebrates a snowball tree, with a speedy tempo and light-hearted lyrics. Singers and dancers many a time get into a frenzied celebration of song and dance while performing this song. The actual content of the song cannot be translated, as it possesses many Russian expressions and words that can hold a double meaning and have no equivalent in other languages. In 2003, Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea FC. Since then, "Kalinka" has been associated with the London based Football Club and is often played before or after important matches.

Kalinka!

This was recorded at Kiev, a Russian restaurant in Beijing. This restaurant has superb food at reasonable prices, but its pride and joy is a world-class opera troupe from the Ukraine that performs a huge repertoire of Russian songs nightly. This song is "Kalinka," a folk song from the steppes that is about a young man's love for a girl whom he calls his "Kalinka," a type of wildflower that grows in the Russian grasslands.

Leningrad Cowboys & Russian Red Army Choir - "Kalinka" / "Gimme All Your Lovin'" - 7/11

TOTAL BALALAIKA SHOW (1993) - part 7 of 11 ------------------- -- Kalinka -- Gimme All Your Lovin' ======================================= Russia's renowned Alexandrov Red Army Ensemble jams with Finland's outlandish rockers the Leningrad Cowboys. The odd pairing of these two groups results in an inspiring collaboration. The concert took place on 12 June 1993 on Senate Square in Helsinki, Finland. The event drew a crowd of approximately 70000 people from two nations - Finland and Russia - that had been engaged in a state of "peaceful coexistence" during the Cold War. The concert featured an eclectic mix of Western rock and Russian folk music, including a balalaika rendition of "Stairway to Heaven", and folk dancers performing to rock songs. ======================================== The Leningrad Cowboys is a Finnish rock and roll band famous for it's humorous songs and concerts featuring the Soviet Red Army Choir. Currently, the band has eleven Cowboys and two Leningrad Ladies. The songs, all somewhat influenced by polka and progressive rock, and performed in English, have themes such as 'vodka', 'tractors', 'rockets', and 'Genghis Khan', as well as folkloric Russian songs, rock and roll ballads and covers from bands as diverse as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, all with lots of humour. ----------------------------------- TheRed Army Choir (Choir Aleksandrov) is a performing ensemble that served as the official army choir of the former Soviet Union's Red ...
Guitar: Kalinka

Kalinka is possibly the best known Russian folk song ever, largely due to the fact that it was always a showpiece song of the Red Army Choir wherever they performed and when they sang it it sounded marvellous. In particular, the male voice choir singing the chorus and then harmonizing behind a soloist, usually a tenor, and accompanied by balalaikas made a memorable sound which would have the audience enraptured. At some point, the tenor would hold on to a note for an impossibly long time with apparent ease. I have tried to do so in the last verse, but only have breath enough for about a quarter of the time he would have held it. This translation of the song comes from the BBC Radio Broadcast for Schools called Singing Together and may not be a literal translation of the actual Russian words.

Ivan Rebroff - Kalinka Malinka

Ivan Rebroff (31 July 1931 -- 27 February 2008) was a German singer, allegedly of Russian ancestry, with an extraordinary vocal range of four and a half octaves, ranging from the soprano to bass registers. Rebroff was born in Berlin as Hans-Rolf Rippert. He was famous for singing Russian folk songs, but also performed opera, light classics and folk songs from many other countries. He was known on stage for his gusto. He performed over 6000 concerts in his career, including a two-year seven-day-a-week stint at the French opera, singing, among other greats, Fiddler on the Roof. Rebroff still performed 12 shows in 14 days when he was well into his seventies, such as on an Australian tour. Ivan Rebroff described himself as international, the "connection between East and West". He became a citizen of Greece and lived on the Greek island of Skopelos in the Sporades. He died in Frankfurt after a long illness. Four days after his death, his brother Horst Rippert, who is nine years his senior (and by his own accounts shot down Antoine de Saint Exupéry), claimed part of Ivan's vast fortune.

Las Balkanieras - Kalinka (Калинка)

I do not claim to own the song "Kalinka" or "Las Balkaniers". LAS BALKANIERAS are 3 beautiful women that can write hits, sing, dance, cook, wash and clean... They are originating from the Mediterranean side of the Balkans and from Russia but currently residing in Düsseldorf/Germany... They call their music Turbo-Electro-Folk-Pop (or "trash-pop") with Dancehall influences. You can buy their album here: shop.crorec.hr "Food Love Music" is available in iTunes now For those who are wondering, the "aaah ahh " part of the song is from Čaje Šukarije by Esme Redžepove, a Romani Macedonian singer. The " Šije šete, šije oto-" is Italo-Dalmatian words; they're playing an old Croatian hand game called "Šijavica" which is similar to the game "Rock, Paper, Scissors", but involving numbers and a bit of math.
