Inside Story - Israeli elections - 22 Jan 09 - Part 1

With just three weeks left before voters go to the polls, Israel's centre-left government is getting high marks from the country's public for its pounding offensive in Gaza. But Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and her ruling centrist Kadima Party may fall victim to the military's success. After the war on Gaza it is clear that the upcoming elections will be about security not about peace. Syria no longer wants to talk; the Palestinians are in a very delicate situation, with a weakened Palestinian Authority and increasingly unpopular president. We ask: How has the war on Gaza affected the domestic political stage? Who has won most of it and who can capitalise on its aftermath? What is the future of the Arabs of Israel? Joining presenter Kamahl Santamaria on Inside Story are guests Uri Avnery, a writer and former member of the Knesset; Gerald Steinberg, the chair of political studies and director of the conflict resolution programme at Bar Ilan University; and Jamal Zahalka, a member of the Knesset and the chairman of the Balad Bloc in the Knesset.

US Policy Will Help Ahmadinejad - Afshin Rattansi on Al Jazeera English

Novelist and Journalist, Afshin Rattansi talks to Kamahl Santamaria of Al Jazeera English about how US policy on sanction against Iran helps hardliners and why the British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown should shut up in Copenhagen. Iran test-fires advanced Sejjil-2 missile Tehran Times Political Desk TEHRAN The Iranian Defense Ministry has announced that the upgraded version of the medium-range Sejjil-2 missile was test-fired successfully on Wednesday. The missile is capable of traveling 2000 kilometers. Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi said the major advantage of the upgraded Sejjil over the previous version is that it cannot be brought down by anti-missile systems. The weapon is a two-stage missile powered by solid fuel which enters the atmosphere quickly and strikes the target at a high speed. These features along with the anti-radar shields make the missile almost undetectable. High precision is another notable feature of the missile, Vahidi explained. The defense minister called the missile test a link in the chain of Irans defense strategy, saying the test was in line with the Islamic Republics policy of enhancing the nations defense capabilities. He went on to say that the Islamic Republics missile program is only defense-oriented and is not a threat to regional peace and stability. Vahidi also highlighted the significant role the new missile will play in improving the tactical flexibility of Iranian military forces. The missile and its launch pad have been designed ...
