Musharraf Karzai Reaction

Ayesha Tanzeem, Urdu VoA News, Washington. In a VOA exclusive, Pakistan's former president and military dictator General Pervez Musharraf called President Karzai's comments concerning the possible war between Pakistan and the US "ridiculous." Answering a question on a Pakistani TV channel, President Karzai had said that if war ever broke out between Pakistan and the US, Afghanistan will side with its brother Pakistan. General Musharraf said that there was no possibility of war between Pakistan and the US and that Karzai should focus on his own country and on neutralizing Al-Qaeda and Taliban and not on speculating about distant possibilities that can be disastrous for both Pakistan and Afghanistan. Afghanistan Karzai's half-brother killed

President Hamid Karzai's half brother, the most powerful man in southern Afghanistan and a lightning rod for criticism of corruption in the government, was assassinated Tuesday by a close associate. His death leaves a dangerous power vacuum in the south just as the government has begun peace talks with insurgents ahead of a US withdrawal. Ahmed Wali Karzai, the head of the Kandahar provincial council, was shot to death while receiving guests at his home in Kandahar, the capital of the province that was the birthplace of the Taliban movement and was the site of a recent US-led offensive. Tooryalai Wesa, the provincial governor of Kandahar, identified the assassin as Sardar Mohammad and said he was a close, "trustworthy" person who had gone to Wali Karzai's house to get him to sign some papers. As Wali Karzai was signing the papers, the assassin "took out a pistol and shot him with two bullets — one in the forehead and one in the chest," Wesa said. "Another patriot to the Afghan nation was martyred by the enemies of Afghanistan." The killing coincided with a visit to the capital, Kabul, by French President Nicolas Sarzoky. "This morning my younger brother Ahmed Wali Karzai was murdered in his home," the Afghan president said during a joint news conference with Sarkozy. "Such is the life of Afghanistan's people. In the houses of the people of Afghanistan, each of us is suffering and our hope is, God willing, to remove this suffering from the people of Afghanistan and ...

Afghanistan's Karzai Buries his Brother

On July 13, Afghan President Hamid Karzai led thousands in funeral prayers for his half-brother whose death on July 12 has left a power gap in the unstable southern province of Kandahar. Ahmad Wali Karzai, one of the most powerful and influential men in southern Afghanistan, was killed by his long-serving bodyguard in house in Kandahar. His death along with a series of assassinations of officials in the city in recent months is being seen as illustrative of the insurgency by the Taliban militants. Mr. Karzai's power base came from his tribal and family background and the fortune he accumulated. In his lifetime he was accused of acquiring his fortune from the illicit drug trade and having links to the CIA; charges he strongly denied and which the Afghan president says have never been proven.
