Standing Strong

Standing strong again: Rebuilding the Fishing community of Kesennuma It will take many years to rebuild the fishing communities affected by the 11 March 2011 tsunami, with some estimates saying at least five years, others talking about a decade. At the same time, it is vitally important to ensure that the rebuilding efforts are guided by a holistic, integrated approach that respects the wishes of the local community. That is the ideal situation, but there is no guarantee that this will happen. Some ports may be rebuilt to their former glory, others may not. In this documentary we follow the experience of a number of large and small fishing communities in Miyagi and Iwate Prefectures. Key individuals from these communities explain the changes as they are taking place. Shigeatsu Hatakeyama, the founder of the NPO "Kaki no Mori wo Shitau Kai (NPO Mori wa Umi no Koibito)" The forest is longing for the sea, the sea is longing for the forest,"promotes the natural ecological link between forests and the ocean. He is one of the survivors and we learn how he is coping in the aftermath of the tsunami that destroyed his community and what's his plans to rebuild are. Ryosuke Sato, the head of Kesennuma fisheries Cooperatives and Tsuguo Muraka, a senior managing director also talks about the damage to the Kesennuma Port, which is one of the most important fishing ports in Japan. As more than 85% of the residents are involved in fisheries related business, the impact of the destruction ...

Minami Sanriku_DDEC_E.m4v

On March 11, 2011 a series of humongous earthquakes jolted the 300 miles coast line of Tohoku. They were so strong that even the earth axis shifted and the bottom of the sea rose by 16ft. This in turn triggered a tsunami of epic dimensions. The bay of Minami Sanriku was hit by a 60ft high wall of water, against which the 15 ft high protective tsunami walls were like toys -- no match. The wave jumped right over them and worked its way up the three rivers devastating everything in its way. Minami Sanriku vanished from the surface of the earth and with it almost half of the people, living here. 500 people are now living in the only major surviving building - Hotel Kanyo. However, they are cut off from life as they knew it, due to the lack of mobility. With all the infra-structure destroyed, there is nothing around the hotel for 12km (8 miles). Docodemo Eco Car will provide free shared-use cars, financed by sponsors, to enable the displaced putting their lives back on track, sports events for the children and PTA activities for the adults. And we will do that in other communities, like Onagawa, Kesenuma, Iwaki, Watari-cho and others. This is our story.....
