Eric Wainaina: "Ni Kii Kiega"

The Population Council co-sponsored the making of "Ni Kii Kiega" ("Mama"), Kenyan musician Eric Wainaina's tribute to mothers. The song is adapted from a Kikuyu folk song and is sung in Kiswahili and Somali. Here are the lyrics in English: "I sing for my mum who bore me / She carried me in her womb for nine months / And on the tenth a visitor arrived / What is better than someones mum? / She carries you in her womb for nine months / The true love is your mum / On the day Mwaniki was born / Ululations were sung like those sung during feasts: / 'Ariririri!' A visitor has arrived!" For more information on safe motherhood, visit www.popcouncil.org
