Habib Koité - Wassiye.wmv

One cannot overstate the influence Africa has had on music of the world. Jazz, blues, rock and roll, gospel, salsa, samba, funk, hip-hop, reggae, zydeco, zouk - the list of genres which have roots in African music is endless. Africa is home to a myriad of styles, and it remains one of the most creative places for music on the planet. Tradition still plays an important role in today's African music, yet influences from around the world are making themselves increasingly heard. Ironically, many of the foreign music styles that have been most influential on today's African music have African origins. They are merely long lost relatives returning home. Once you have listened to Africa we hope you are inspired to explore further the richness and variety of African music. A portion of Putumayos proceeds from the sale of this CD is donated to www.concernusa.org in support of their efforts to make positive and sustainable changes in the lives of families worldwide living on a dollar or less per day.

Mali Sadio - Habib Koité

As night falls across Africa, the upbeat rhythms and percussion are muted and parents begin to lull their children to sleep with soothing songs. In rural villages, the day comes to an end with parents singing soft ballads that tell stories of ancient kingdoms and long-cherished tales about ancestors. In Africas bustling cities, families keep traditions alive by singing songs that ease their children into the land of dreams. Putumayo Presents African dreamland 1. Habib Koité - Namania

Habib Koité and Bamada - "Namania" From the album Afriki (2007) "Namania" is based on a style called dansa from Keyes, the city where Habib´s family originates. Habib sings of a dark-skinned girl from the country. Her beauty leads him to dream of things he has loved and lost, such as the trees from across the river where Habib used to play as a child that have now been cut down to build houses.

Habib Koité is an internationally known Malian singer, songwriter and guitarist. His supporting cast, Bamada, is a super-group of West African talent, including Kélétigui Diabaté playing balafon. This wonderful song is taken from his debut album Muso Ko. Two tracks "I Ka Barra" and "Din Din Wo" are included in the Sample Music package included with Windows Vista. Possibly the only two good things I ever got from that OS. Windows 7 is a good OS, but for unknown reasons have broken the tradition of good sample music. The three sample songs on Windows 7 are nothing close to what they've had since Windows 98. Enjoy Music and Images belong to the respective Artists and all Rights are reserved. Habib Koité~Africa

With "Africa" Habib proposes that Africans take charge of their own development and stop relying on aid and promises from the west. With a Latin-influenced groove and a horn section fronted by James Brown veteran Pee-Wee Ellis, Habib assures Africans that just because the west is wealthy does not mean it has a better quality of life. He encourages young Africans to stay in their native lands and help build a better future for their continent. 2007 Cumbancha LLC & Contre-Jour www.habibkoite.com

Habib Koité- I Ka Barra (Your Work)

The song is I Ka Barra (Your Work), written and composed by Habib Koité, a Malian musician who sings and plays the guitar. His supporting cast, Bamada, is a group of West African talent, including Kélétigui Diabaté playing balafon. Koité is known primarily for his unique approach to playing the guitar by tuning it on a pentatonic scale and playing on open strings as one would on a kamale n'goni. Other pieces of his music sound more like the blues or flamenco which are two styles he learned under Khalilou Traore.
