Part 1 of 9 Length 1h 25min The Korean War (25 June 1950 - armistice signed 27 July 1953) was a military conflict between the Republic of Korea, supported by the United Nations, and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, supported by the People's Republic of China (PRC), with military material aid from the Soviet Union. The war was a result of the physical division of Korea by an agreement of the victorious Allies at the conclusion of the Pacific War at the end of World War II. The Korean peninsula was ruled by Japan from 1910 until the end of World War II. Following the surrender of Japan in 1945, American administrators divided the peninsula along the 38th Parallel, with United States troops occupying the southern part and Soviet troops occupying the northern part.[29] The failure to hold free elections throughout the Korean Peninsula in 1948 deepened the division between the two sides, and the North established a Communist government. The 38th Parallel increasingly became a political border between the two Koreas. Although reunification negotiations continued in the months preceding the war, tension intensified. Cross-border skirmishes and raids at the 38th Parallel persisted. The situation escalated into open warfare when North Korean forces invaded South Korea on 25 June 1950. It was the first significant armed conflict of the Cold War. The United Nations, particularly the United States, came to the aid of South Korea in repelling the invasion. DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchived.blogspot.com John Ford (February 1, 1894 -- August 31, 1973) was an American film director. He was famous for both his westerns such as Stagecoach, The Searchers, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and adaptations of such classic 20th-century American novels as The Grapes of Wrath. His four Academy Award for Best Directors (1935, 1940, 1941, 1952) is a record, and one of those films, How Green Was My Valley, also won Best Picture. In a career that spanned more than 50 years, Ford directed more than 140 films (although nearly all of his silent films are now lost) and he is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential filmmakers of his generation. Ford's films and personality were held in high regard by his colleagues, with Ingmar Bergman and Orson Welles among those who have named him as one of the greatest directors of all time. In particular, Ford was a pioneer of location shooting and the long shot which frames his characters against a vast, harsh and rugged natural terrain. John Ford began his career in film after moving to California in July 1914. He followed in the footsteps of his multi-talented older brother Francis Ford, twelve years his senior, who had left home years earlier and had worked in vaudeville before becoming a movie actor. Francis played in hundreds of silent pictures for Thomas Edison, Georges Melies and Thomas Ince, eventually progressing to become a prominent Hollywood actor-writer-director <b>...</b>

The Korean War Footage from Korean side The Korean War (1950~1953) Original Footage...(Korean Side) Although the United Nations received messages that the North Koreans were about to invade, all were rejected. The United States received less than two weeks notice of the Korean War—the Chinese-authorized, North Korean invasion of the South on 25 June 1950. The CIA provided the early notice; before the war, in early 1950, CIA China station officer Douglas Mackiernan received Chinese and North Korean intelligence forecasting the summer KPA attack on the South so as to unify the country. Earlier, after the US missions had left the communist People's Republic of China, he volunteered to remain and conduct spy operations. Afterward, he and a team of CIA local mercenaries then escaped the Chinese, in a months-long horse trek across the Himalaya mountains; he was killed within miles of Lhasa, Tibet — yet his team delivered the intelligence to headquarters. Thirteen days later, the North Korean People's Army (KPA) crossed the 38th-parallel border and invaded South Korea. Mackiernan was posthumously awarded the CIA Intelligence Star for valor. Under the guise of counter-attacking a South Korean provocation raid, the North Korean Army (KPA) crossed the 38th parallel, behind artillery fire, at Sunday dawn of 25 June 1950. The KPA said that Republic of Korea Army (ROK Army) troops, under command of the régime of the "bandit traitor Syngman Rhee", had crossed the border first—and that <b>...</b>

The TV series M*A*S*H is one well known example. The 1959 novel The Manchurian Candidate has twice been made into films. The 1982 film Inchon about the historic battle that occurred there in September 1950 was a financial and critical failure. Many films about the war have been produced in Asian countries as well. * The Steel Helmet (1951) is a war film directed by Samuel Fuller and produced by Lippert Studios during the Korean War. It was the first studio film about the war, and the first of several war films by producer-director-writer Fuller. * Battle Hymn (1957) stars Rock Hudson as Colonel Dean Hess, a preacher who became a pilot. He accidentally destroyed a German orphanage during World War II, and rejoins the USAF in Korea; he rescued orphans during that war. * The Bamboo Prison (1954) stars Robert Francis, EG Marshall and Brian Keith in a story set in a North Korean POW camp. * The Bridges at Toko-Ri (1955) stars William Holden as a Naval Aviator assigned to destroy the bridges at Toko Ri, while battling doubts; it is based on an eponymous James Michener novel. * The Forgotten (2004) features a decimated tank unit, lost behind enemy lines, battling the vicissitudes of the war as well as their own demons. * The Hunters (1958), adapted from the novel The Hunters by James Salter, stars Robert Mitchum and <b>...</b>

2nd Korean War? South admits firing first shells in row with North Korea

South Korea has admitted it fired artillery shells that triggered an early morning clash with North Korea. However it says it was part of a military drill and denied it was directed at the North. Earlier Seoul blamed the North for what it called an unprovoked shelling of its island. Pyongyang claimed the South had violated its maritime border during the military drills. Seoul has since threatened its neighbour with what it called 'enormous retaliation'. Russia's foreign ministy said the clashes were unacceptable and called on both sides to show restraint.... Korean War Heroes - They Are Not Forgotten.

Korean War 1950 - 1953. The Korean War is often described as 'The Forgotten War'. The memorial song on this video istimeless and honours the memory of those who have died in the service and defence of Australia in war. 17000 Australians served in Korea. 339 died and 1215 wounded. Australian troops participated in two major battles in 1951. On the evening of 22 April, Chinese forces attacked the Kapyong valley and forced South Korean and New Zealand troops into retreat; other UN troops, including Australians, were ordered to halt the attack. After a night of fierce fighting, during which their positions were overrun, the Australians recaptured their postions and stalled the Chinese advance, at a cost of only 32 men killed and 53 wounded. For their contribution to this action, 3 RAR was awarded a US Presidential Citation. The second major battle for the Australians was Operation Commando, an attack against a Chinese-held salient in a bend of the Imjin, a river running north-south that crosses the 38th parallel just above Seoul. Here the Commonwealth Division, including the Australians, had two key objectives: Hills 355 and 317. The attack began on 3 October, and after five days of heavy fighting the Chinese withdrew. Twenty Australians were killed in the battle and 89 were wounded. From 1951 on, both sides found themselves engaged in a war of attrition reminiscent of the Western Front, where men lived in tunnels, redoubts and sandbagged forts behind barbed wire defences <b>...</b>

Russian foreign ministry says the clashes are unacceptable and called on both sides to show restraint to prevent the outbreak of military conflict. North Korea is threatening to continue launching strikes against the South if it violates their disputed sea border. The North also claims that its neighbour was the first to fire artillery shells. However, Seoul insists it acted in retaliation after rockets hit Yeonpyeong Island. The Korean War: Landing at Inchon - Part 1

Part 1 of 6 Length: 56:52 min A 1990 PBS documentary on the landing at Inchon in the Korean War. "The Battle of Inchon (Korean: 인천 상륙 작전, Hanja: 仁川上陸作戰, Incheon Sangnyuk Jakjeon; code name: Operation Chromite) was an amphibious invasion and battle of the Korean War that resulted in a decisive victory and strategic reversal in favor of the United Nations (UN). The operation involved some 75000 troops and 261 naval vessels, and led to the recapture of the South Korean capital Seoul two weeks later. [3] The battle began on September 15, 1950, and ended September 19. Through a surprise amphibious assault far from the Pusan Perimeter that UN and South Korean forces were desperately defending, the largely undefended city of Incheon was secured after being bombed by UN forces. The battle ended a string of victories by the invading North Korean People's Army (NKPA). The subsequent UN recapture of Seoul partially severed NKPA's supply lines in South Korea. The majority of United Nations ground forces involved were US Marines, commanded by General of the Army Douglas MacArthur. MacArthur was the driving force behind the operation, overcoming the strong misgivings of more cautious generals to a risky assault over extremely unfavorable terrain." -- (en.wikipedia.org

North Korea threatened on Thursday to launch a "sacred" nuclear war against South Korea if it attacks, as Seoul staged military exercises that have raised already high tensions on the peninsula. Defence chief Kim Yong Chun said North Korea was fully prepared to launch a war and would use its nuclear capabilities if attacked and warned the South against intruding even the smallest amount on its territory. North Korea's anger has been piqued this week by South Korea's staging of live-fire drills on Yeonpyeong Island, which was shelled by the North's artillery on November 23. North Korea ready to unleash 'Holy Nuclear War' on South

North Korea says it's ready to use its nuclear deterrent in what it calls a 'sacred war' against the South. The North's defence minister's statement was reported by state media there. The minister accused Seoul of deliberately stoking tension by staging successive joint military drills with the US next to the North's territory. He said the latest exercise, one of the largest in the South's history, was an outright preparation for an attack against Pyongyang. The maoeuvres involved heavy military machinery, fighter jets, missile launchers and hundreds of troops, and was held just thirty kilometres from North Korea. The series of war games comes in the wake of the recent cross-border artillery exchange that killed four South Koreans. Despite the rapid post--Second World War Allied demobilizations, there were substantial US forces occupying Japan; under General Douglas MacArthur's command, they could be made ready to fight the North Koreans. Only the British Commonwealth had comparable forces in the area. On Saturday, 24 June 1950, US Secretary of State Dean Acheson informed President Truman by telephone, "Mr. President, I have very serious news. The North Koreans have invaded South Korea." Truman and Acheson discussed a US invasion response with defense department principals, who agreed that the United States was obligated to repel military aggression, paralleling it with Adolf Hitler's 1930s aggressions, and said that the mistake of appeasement must not be repeated. In his autobiography, President Truman acknowledged that fighting the invasion was essential to the American goal of the global containment of communism as outlined in the National Security Council Report 68 (NSC-68) (declassified in 1975): "Communism was acting in Korea, just as Hitler, Mussolini and the Japanese had ten, fifteen, and twenty years earlier. This episode details the fighting around the Naktong River, west of Taegu and the Pusan perimeter. The Chinese Nationalists on Taiwan (Kuomintang) wish to send 3 divisions to fight in the Korean War, but are turned down by President Truman. MacArthur wanted them. Presidential advisor, Averil Harriman, is sent to Japan to talk to MacArthur and tell him not to attack China, on the president's orders. He's also asked to check on MacArthur's state of mental health, and whether he's fit to command. The USA is able to control the messages coming out of Korea in the UN, as the Russians were still boycotting the Security Council. British Prime Minister Clement Atlee gets on board to support the UN collective security action in Korea. The British have difficulties sending combat-ready units to Korea, but eventually assemble the British 29th Brigade out of the UK advance base at Hong Kong.

During the last year of the Korean War both sides held positions in southern North Korea while peace talks were conducted. But the war continued and many bloody battles took place. Many know or heard of places like "Heartbreak Ridge or Pork Chop Hill but not many know of others like "Sandbag Castle", "Bloody Ridge" and "Christmas Hill". These are not as well known but just as bloody. This video is dedicated to the men who fought on these far-away mountains including my Father, Lt.
