French Opera - The Classical Tradition 7: Kosma - Les Chansons de Bilitis
A few excerpts from the operetta Les Chansons de Bilitis by Joseph Kosma (1905-1969), in which the young poet Cynesias (Christian Borel) enters a poetry contest by his father, the great poet Agathon (Gaston Orbal) under the nom de plume of Bilitis. The real Bilitis (Mathe Altery), a shepherdess, has to pose as the creator of the verses and becomes famous in her own right. Myrrhine (Irene Fabrice) even asks her to join a group of women on the island of Lesbos and become a second Sappho. This recording is from 1952 and is conducted by the composer.
