
A fierce battle ensues between the vanaras and the rakshashas sent to free Kumbhakarna, and Dhumraksh plays havoc with the vanara army. Vibhishan speculates that Ravan will make an all out attempt to awaken Kumbhakarna, since he is helpless while asleep but invincible when awake. He therefore proposes that the vanaras form a protective shield around Kumbhakarna, and Sugriv is struck by the irony of protecting their enemy. But Rama and Vibhishan both agree that they'd form a vyuha around Kumbhakarna that's impossible for any warrior of Lanka to penetrate. Kumbha and Nukumbha arrive to get Ravan's permission to awaken their father, insisting that it's their duty to go and awaken him. Mandodari appeals to Ravan to honor their sentiments, but he refuses. At the palace, Prahasta's widow has fallen ill, and the doctor tells Mandodari that it's the shock of having lost her husband. All the womenfolk, including Manodari and Vajramala, are worried. Vajramala then scans the widows in the room, and suddenly has a vision of herself standing in the line-up. She runs back to her room and starts sobbing. Mandodari comes after her and tries to calm her. Vajramala protests that she doesn't want to become a widow, and explains to Mandodari the vanar strategy of having a 3-pronged vyuha headed by Lakshman himself that would prevent the rakshashas from rescuing or awakening him. She asks Mandodari how could Kumbhakarna possibly be rescued by anybody. The two then start crying in each other's <b>...</b>
