Artist Info; An exponent of Poorab-Ang Thumri for the past few years,Kumud Diwan has emerged as one of the most promising names in Thumri. Her voice has the tare timbre reminiscent of Siddheshwari Devi and Rasoolan Bai of Banaras. Trained by Anima Dasgupta and Sahanti Hiranand,a disciple of Begam Akhtar, she has mastered the Banaras Gharana Khayal and Thumri with Pt. Bholanath Mishra. She excels in Thumri, Dadra, Chaiti, Kajri etc. She renders rare ghazals sung by Begam Akhtar and has done extensive research on her. A research scholar with the Sangeet Natak Academy, Kumud is working on a project for reviving some rare Thumris and Tappas. Recently selected for a senior fellowship by the Ministry of Culture for researching the comparative styles and regional influences in semiclassical music, she is a Judge with the Association of Indian Universities and has conducted several lectures/demos for Delhi and Punjab Universities.
