Vorfall in Kwangju (EunSun Lee)
The story is based on a Korean "Madang" play: A young man kills several people after the state takes everything away from his poor family because the land is needed for a new social housing program. - EunSun Lee chose the story from her home country for her first work for the operatic stage. It had its world premiere at the Dresden State Opera (studio stage) in April 2008, conducted by Lennart Dohms. The production is by Hendrik Müller, designed by Julia Beyer, choreography by Alessandra Fabbri.

genre:Orchestra performance Orchestra:Democratic People's Republic of Korea Orchestra conductor:Byung Hwa Kim Exemplum, premiered in Cologne on May 8, 1981, was composed in memory of the military massacre of Kwangju which has manifested itself as the most important event in recent Korean history. Despite the violent oppression of public pro-test in May of 1980, the events of Kwangju led to a renewed formation of the South-Korean resistance - a movement against a regime of brutal exploitaion and oppression,ignoring basic human rights.The riots of 1987,sweeping across the whole country and inclu-ding all classes,forced the dictator Chun Doo-Hwan to resign.The South Koreans have learned from the occurrences in Kwangju.One of the main ideas of the opposition became reality:the riots of 1987 were marked by minjung,the dynamic alliance among all tyrannized classes.Yet at the same time,Exemplum as an orchestral work of a leading artist strives to convry a general thought,as it is noted in the score:This work is more than a reminder of a certain historic event;it should be understood as a universal example,a monument of sorrow for the victims and of an admonition to fight for freedom in the whold world
