Kwame Kwei Armah first became a nationally recognized star as paramedic Finlay Newton in BBC's hit TV show "Casualty" which aired from 1999 through 2004. In 2003, Kwame received the Screen National Film and Television Award for Favorite TV Actor. He has been a long time featured actor and celebrity for numerous shows for the BBC. As a playwright, Elmina's Kitchen originally premiered at the National Theatre of London, was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play of 2003. The play went on to tour nationally before playing on the West End of London with Kwame playing the leading role. His second play Fix-Up was also staged at the National Theatre. The Notting Hill Carnival used to get under way on the Saturday with the steel band competition. Sunday is Kids' Day, when the costume prizes are awarded. On Bank Holiday Monday, the main parade takes place. It generally begins on Great Western Road, then winds its way along Chepstow Road, on to Westbourne Grove, and then Ladbroke Grove. In the evening, the floats leave the streets in procession, and people carry continue partying at the many Notting Hill Carnival after parties.

Kwame Kwei-Armah, an award-winning British playwright, director, actor, singer and broadcaster, was selected as CENTERSTAGE's Artistic Director in February 2011 after a nine-month search. Kwei Armah is well-known to CENTERSTAGE's audiences through his plays ELMINA's KITCHEN and LET THERE BE LOVE, as well as a turn as director of THINGS OF DRY HOURS. He serves on the board of The National Theatre and The Tricycle Theatre, both in London. He most recently served as Artistic Director for the World Arts Festival in Senegal, a month-long World Festival of Black Arts and Culture. His first fully programmed season will be the 2012-13 season.
