Sixteen champions from nineteen Empire/Commonwealth games spread over 80 years!! Don Quarrie ,Ben Johnson,Allan Wells,Linford Christie,Asafa Powell,Ato Bolden...quite a lineup! But it's also great to see ( however briefly) such great names from the past...Jerome,Gardener,Antao, and the marvellous Canadian double Olympic champion Percy Williams. Sadly,try as I may,there appears to be no footage of Mike Agostini's 100yard run from 1954,and,more surprisingly,Quarrie's first gold in Edinburgh in 1970.Pretty sure the BBC will have that shoved in a dusty old archive somewhere,but it ain't on the internet!Photos will therefore have to suffice. Hopefully one day enough of these will be available to show all the races in full...had great fun putting this together...hope you enjoy it!

Christie in his prime defeats Fredericks of Namibia and Mitchell of the USA in one of his greatest runs. Further back in the field were Surin of Canada,Stewart of Jamaica and a disappointed Burrell of the USA,who had run 9.97 in the first of the semis which had also seen the exit of the defending (but stripped) champion Ben Johnson.Actual defending champion Carl Lewis sadly didn't make the US team for the 100m but still managed to win the Olympic long jump title.
