A non-government organization says the kids were forced to work 12 hour days for next to nothing. Social activists in India say 30 children under the age of 14 have been rescued from sweatshops in New Delhi. The children were rescued Thursday by police officials and staff from a local NGO, called Save the Childhood Movement, in English. The organization's chairman says the shop owners forced the children to work for next to nothing. [Ramashankar Chaurasia, Chairman, Save the Childhood Movement]: "Approximately 30 children were rescued by us today. These children were engaged in various occupations including tinsel thread embroidery work, bag making, and so on." The industries where the children worked were sealed and their owners taken into police custody. [Mohammed Sufijar, Rescued Laborer]: "I worked for 12 hours a day and they paid me 100 rupees [$2.26] a week." The children were then taken for medical check ups. In a recent landmark judgment, India's Supreme Court banned children from working in Indian circuses, after a petition was filed by the Save the Childhood Movement.

Moving onto Japan where Latino laborers are feeling the pinch of the global economic slowdown. Now they're faced with a choice of staying in Japan, or receiving some money from the Japanese government to return to Latin America. In Toyota City, home to the world's largest automaker, nearly 80 percent of local Latino laborers have lost their jobs at auto parts factories. Some of them are living in destitution and depend on food aid to feed themselves and their families. In response, the Japanese government suggests they go back to live in Latin America. The workers are being offered 300000 yen (about $3000 US dollars) and an additional 200000 yen ($2000 US dollars) for a dependent, to compensate for their travel and moving expenses.Accepting the offer means having their work visas revoked. If they dump us and other foreigners who have supported Japan's manufacturing sector, where are they going to get those laborers from? Practically, they are trying to dump us from Japan." China Labor Watch investigated three factories that supply American based companies similar to Target with manufactured goods. At each factory, investigators uncovered the existence of child laborers, as well as numerous labor violations, including the absence of any labor contracts, excessive overtime hours, and a general hostile working condition.

This was totally un-expected. I was looking into the distance and though I saw something coming around the corner so I grabbed my camera and zoomed in to see this work crew coming around the corner. This video is from June 10 2011, at Hanjin Heavy Industries in Busan, South Korea. Hanjin Heavy Industries (Co.) is one of the world's top ship manufacturers. However, Hanjin has unilaterally fired 172 workers, to fund its expansion to the Phillipines. Hanjin's ostensible reason behind the layoffs is its deficit. However, inspection shows the striking incongruity of this statement: Hanjin, among its "deficits," has managed to deliver 174000000 Won (about 170000$) to its investors after the layoffs. Laborers have been protesting this measure with 2 weeks of strike until now. Kim Jin-Sook, one of Hanjin's female laborers, has been protesting on the top of a high crane for a total of 163 days. She is still dangerously standing on Hanjin's #85 crane, even at this very moment, June 17 2011. This is not unique to Hanjin Heavy Industries. Yoosung Enterprise Co., and Ssangyong Motors have also hired gangs to violently repress laborers' strikes. Some laborers have committed suicide in the face of such repression, leaving their families behind. This violence should be stopped. We beseech for international awareness on this issue and support from human rights organizations. Companies are hiring gangs to beat up laborers at this very moment in South Korea. This inhumane suffering must be stopped.
