Trails of the City: Melbourne Laneways

Directed by Eleni Arbus, Independent Filmmaker on location in Melbourne, Australia Melbournes laneways have been transformed from narrow functional alleys to dynamic cultural spaces. This evolution is the result of a cultural awakening among the Melbournes creative entrepreneurs. Rather then working to block projects and control development, the city worked with private interests and artists to encourage the laneways progress. Trails of the City looks at the creation of the laneways from various perspectives; it illustrates how diverse groups aligned organically to generate these vibrant and eclectic spaces. Art & About 2010: Laneway Art & The Bike Bike

Are You Looking at Me? Laneway Art Uncover the fascinating history and quiet beauty of Sydney's laneways, as you wander the network of these resonant city spaces. Nine contemporary artists selected by renowned curator Barbara Flynn challenge us to look at the potential of city lanes in a new way. Using art installations with projection, light, sound, text and imagery the artists reference the culture of our city and transform the spaces their works inhabit. The Bike Bike Marvel at the construction of this enormous 12 metre high Penny Farthing Bicycle, built from recycled bikes by artist Alasdair Nicol. Referencing our past and our future, The Bike Bike challenges us to think about Sydney transport, and its implications for our environment. With this issue now central to building greener cities, and the City's Bike Plan an important component of Sustainable Sydney 2030, this striking installation is not only an extraordinary work of art, but also timely and thought provoking. www.artandabout.com.au

Laneway Commissions 2011: Neon Natives - Reko Rennie

Neon Natives features a selection of Australian animals against a diamond geometric patterned background which is a cultural identifier of the Kamilaroi people. Historically, shields and other objects would have been carved with this diamond motif design. Neon lights trace the outline of each animal, transforming the work at night. The native animal imagery references decorative kitsch found in Australiana souvenirs. Using spray paint, stencils and neon lighting, Rennie reworks and blurs the cultural and kitsch into a contemporary visual language, as an expression of the tension of contemporary Aboriginal connection to land and history. ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Born in Melbourne, Reko Rennie is a Kamilaroi/Gamilaraay/Gummaroi man. Rennie's art practice explores what it means to be an urban Aboriginal in contemporary Australian society. Drawing inspiration from his Aboriginal heritage, he recreates cultural images in a contemporary context using spray paint and stencils. His work often features the characteristic flora and fauna imagery that represents his community. Rennie is represented by Dianne Tanzer Gallery + Projects.
