Manuel de Falla - Serenata Andaluza {de Larrocha}

Manuel de Falla y Matheu (November 23, 1876 - November 14, 1946) was a Spanish composer. Serenata andaluza (1899) Alicia de Larrocha, piano Manuel de Falla was born in Cádiz. His early teacher in music was his mother; at the age of 9 he was introduced to his first piano professor. Little is known of that period of his life, but his relationship with his teacher was likely conflicted. From the late 1890s he studied music in Madrid, piano with José Tragó and composition with Felipe Pedrell. In 1899 by unanimous vote he was awarded the first prize at the piano competition at his school of music, and around that year he started to use de with his first surname, making Manuel de Falla the name he became known as from that time on. When only the surname is used, however, the de is omitted. It was from Pedrell, during the Madrid period, that Falla became interested in native Spanish music, particularly Andalusian flamenco (specifically cante jondo), the influence of which can be strongly felt in many of his works. Among his early pieces are a number of zarzuelas, but his first important work was the one-act opera La vida breve (Life is Short, or The Brief Life, written in 1905, though revised before its premiere in 1913). Falla spent the years 1907 to 1914 in Paris, where he met a number of composers who had an influence on his style, including the impressionists Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy and Paul Dukas. He wrote little more music, however, until his return to Madrid at the ...

Alicia de Larrocha (1923 - 2009) plays Exaltacion, from Turina's Danzas fantasticas, Op. 22. This recording was produced by Hispavox about 1961, then released under the Turnabout Vox label in 1981. See the New York Times review of this recording here (excerpt below): www.nytimes.com "Turina was a generation younger than Granados and Albeniz, but like them, he devoted his energies to the cause of developing a contemporary Spanish idiom. A student of Vincent d'Indy in Paris, Turina wrote in a cosmopolitan style that takes in elements of Impressionism as well as many of the modal, Arabic-influenced melodic traits of traditional Spanish music. One of his masterpieces is the four-movement sonata ''Sanlucar de Barrameda'' (Op.24), a virtuosic tour-de-force that dates from 1922. Miss de Larrocha's performance (TV 34773) is an unbridled burst of energy that sets this disk head and shoulders above its companions in the Turnabout series. The ''Danzas fantasticas'' (Op.22), on the same disk, are nearly as electrifying."

Alicia de Larrocha plays Albéniz / Halffter "Rapsodia española" (I)

Albéniz "Rapsodia española", arranged for piano and orchestra by Cristóbal Halffter, performed by Alicia de Larrocha and London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, in 1983. PART II : www.youtube.com ~~~ Albéniz composed "Rapsodia española" in 1886-87 for two pianos, but it was left to his friend Tomás Bretón to create a version for piano and orchestra. Later, George Enescu in 1911 and Cristóbal Halffter in 1959 have made their own arrangements. Halffters arrangement has become the preferred version among performers, in time. Rapsodia española consists of four themes associated with four Spanish genres; petenera, jota, malagueña and estudiantina. ~~~
