Inside was a silver slip of paper (a bit like Charlie & the Chocolate Factory) saying she had won £1000 Irish pounds! So with money in her pocket she bought her first guitar, (she also bought her mother a washing machine, but I digress), taught herself to play, and began strumming and singing till she was old enough to leave the homestead. Armed with adventurous blood, an ambitious heart, and a crap sense of direction, Kal prepared to voyage wherever the wind blew her. It wasnt very windy though, (global warming hadnt hit Ireland yet!) so the furthest she got was Dublin city to attend Rockschool. (Irelands equivalent of Brit School) With her startling voice and heart wrenching songs of love gained, love lost and everything in between, Kal won Ireland's National Radio Stations prestigious 2FM Song Contest and found herself on the airwaves, on the box and, once again, in the money! She began to gig regularly on the Irish circuit, leading to BIG supports with the likes of James Brown, The Beach Boys and Paddy Casey. After that she vowed to sally forth in whatever direction her guitar case pointed It pointed west - the bright lights and dusty deserts of the USA were calling so she took up an offer to tour America with Michael Flatley s Feet of Flames as a musician, playing huge football stadiums to 30000 people a night. Lead Me On, from the album of Lavelle White "Miss Lavelle". Lavelle White began performing in Houston clubs in the 1950's with the Johnny Copeland Band. White also toured nationally throughout the '50's and '60's as an opening act or supporting act for numerous R&B packages, which included BB King, Bobby Bland, Junior Parker, Sam Cooke, Gene Chandler, Gladys Knight & The Pips, the Isley Brothers, Aretha Franklin, and Smokey Robinson. After her recording career ended at Duke in 1964, she continued working clubs in Texas and the south, including stints with famed Arkansas guitarist Lary Davis. She has been voted Houstons Blues Artist Of The Year, and recieved three French Academy Awards, including the Bill Broonzy Award and the Charlie Cross Academy award by President George Mitterand for her talent and contribution the the blues. 1994, she recorded her first full album, Miss Lavelle, on Antone's Records and it was voted one of the best blues albums of the year. She recieved three WC Handy Award nominations in May 1995, including Artist of the Year. The long hard years of hard work have finally paid off for Lavelle White, as she has finally begun to recieve the recogniztion deserving of her talent.
