Show People with Paul Wontorek: "Miss Saigon" Broadway Legend Lea Salonga

Broadway fans everywhere know Lea Salonga as the preternaturally gifted original star of Miss Saigon, and films fans know her best as the voice that brought not one but two Disney princesses (Jasmine and Mulan) to life. Salonga is again sharing that legendary voice with New York audiences, in a return cabaret engagement at landmark New York venue Café Carlyle through June 25. In this week's episode of Show People, the Tony winner sits down with Broadway.com Editor-in-Chief Paul Wontorek to chat about her very un-Disney Princess-like love of splicer-slaying video games, fist-pumping the Tony Awards 20 years after her emotional win and why she would love to guest on Glee playing mom to her talented fellow Filipina, Charice Pempengco.

LEA SALONGA SINGS TV5'S KANTA PILIPINAS THEME SONG

MANILA, Philippines - When Lea Salonga came down from her second-floor dressing room in a Quezon City studio, the staff and other talents literally stopped preparing for the shoot and looked at her with amazement. The West End and Broadway star, and multi-awarded singer and film actress was in the house. Lea then approached Raffy Francisco, the director of the music video for Kanta Pilipinas' theme song, who gave her instructions on what she was to do in front of the camera. Direk Raffy gave his cue and after a few minutes, Lea started to sing and dance for almost four minutes. When the song ended, the silence was broken with a thundering applause. In one take, it was as if she performed for everyone inside the studio and not for the camera. It only proved one thing. No matter what project Lea is in, she always makes sure to deliver with dedication and perfection—a character of hers that has inspired many young and aspiring Filipino talents to be like her. Behind the scenes at Lea Salonga's music video shoot for Kanta Pilipinas' theme song. As always, the ultimate performer did most of her scenes in one take. Photo by Dino Testa for InterAksyon.com. Though it is not yet certain whether she'll be one of the mentors in the upcoming TV5 reality singing search called Kanta Pilipinas, the mere fact that Lea's performing the theme song was more than enough to give the local show some international flair. Francisco "Kiko" Salazar, an Awit Awardee, composed the song. "My husband ...

Lea Salonga-When the Winter's Gone

From INSPIRED LYRICS: Pardon me sir, I don't know who you are. But I think I see something in your eyes Though I could be wrong. Winter is here and all the roses lie deep beneath the snow That's where lovers go to hide from pain and sorrow. Never for sure when your luck will turn Waiting out that snowy day Hope for a cure that someday you'll learn Why love keeps on going when there's no one there. Pardon me sir, I think it's up from here. Take this one from me, one day you'll feel free to Fly away wherever you want to. Never can tell where the dawn will break When you find your shoulder to cry on. After a spell you won't feel the ache And you'll forget the corner you've been living in so long. You'll breathe a sigh and see it's time to move along Just a little stronger when the winter's gone. When the winter's gone.

No copyright infringement intended. Need I say anything about how Lea performed? She was superb. Whenever she sings, I'd always get goosebumps because she has that quality of voice that stands out among the female singers on the show. Her voice is not tiny; it was whole, full, filled with expression. Her "I Dreamed A Dream" is still as powerful and passionate as it should be.
