Promenades and Ringroads - Konrad Smigielski and 1960s Leicester

In 1962 Leicester became only the second city in England to appoint a full time city planning officer. His name was Konrad Smigielski and his period in office, from 1962 to 1972, saw some of the most radical changes to the built environment in Leicester's history. To this day many people in Leicester recall Smigielski as the man who destroyed old Leicester. This short film explores whether this assessment is fair and asks how the planning decisions made in the 1960s impact on the city of today. For further information about Konrad Smigielski and his time in Leicester you can listen to radio programmes online at 'My Leicestershire History' in the BBC Radio Leicester section - www.myleicestershire.org.uk . Professor Simon Gunn of the Centre for Urban History has written about Smigielski in 'Between modernism and conservation: Konrad Smigielski and the planning of postwar Leicester' in Rodger, R. ed., A History of Modern Leicester Lancaster: Carnegie Press (forthcoming 2012), as has Ben Beazley in 'Postwar Leicester', Sutton Publishing Ltd, 2006. Beckford hat trick & highlights - Leicester 4-0 Nottingham Forest | FA Cup 3R replay 17-01-12

Jermaine Beckford hit a clinical hat-trick as Leicester City humiliated East Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest to cruise into the fourth round of the FA Cup. George Boateng set the hosts on their way, turning in Lloyd Dyer's fine low cross early on. And, after Robbie Findley missed a staggeringly easy chance for the visitors, volleying over from almost under the bar, the Foxes romped home in style. Beckford headed his first from close range after a swift break following a Forest corner, made it 3-0 after the interval with a clever chipped finish and added a third when he shot home at the second attempt. But, in truth, the margin of victory in this all-Championship tie could have been far greater. A run of one win in 10 matches and just three goals, all of which came in that sole win against Ipswich, hardly provided an inspiring pre-match rallying call to the visiting side or their fans. In keeping with that form, the Reds started the third-round replay with the sort of sloppiness you would expect from a team languishing in the relegation zone. Time and time again Forest gifted possession to their hosts, who were more composed, more threatening, generally sharper and could have been 3-0 up inside ten minutes. Boateng's own goal put the hosts ahead inside seven minutes, when he could only turn a teasing low cross by Lloyd Dyer into his own net. Neil Danns also had a blistering goalbound 18-yard half-volley headed over the bar by stand-in centre half Guy Moussi and Forest ...

Norwich 1-2 Leicester - Official Highlights and Goals | FA Cup 5th Round 18-02-12

David Nugent fired Leicester City through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup with a superbly-taken winner against Norwich City at Carrow Road. The visitors led through Sean St Ledger's header, but Wes Hoolahan levelled, following up his own penalty after Kasper Schmeichel had saved. Both sides had efforts cleared off the line in pursuit of a winner. But Nugent won it, collecting Jermaine Beckford's knockdown, before jinking through the Canaries defence to finish. Nigel Pearson had demanded a response from his Leicester side following their 3-2 midweek loss at Watford and got what he desired early on. The Foxes pelted the Norwich penalty box with a series of corners and their fourth in quick succession, from Ben Marshall, found St Ledger, who rose above Steve Morison at the near post to glance home. The early pace refused to ease and Leicester showed no signs of settling for a one-goal lead, pouring forward at every opportunity and looking like they had the Canaries rattled. But Norwich were handed a respite when Foxes keeper Schmeichel conceded a penalty. The Dane jumped over the top of Elliott Bennett and, although he got a fist to the ball, referee Mike Dean pointed to the spot. Use accessible player and disable flyout menus Schmeichel saved Hoolahan's penalty kick superbly, diving to his left, but the ball spun back out to the Irishman who duly clattered it into an empty net. Also, the many violent offences committed by Muslims against English people are not being treated seriously enough by the Authorities, resulting in such cases failing to be given the investigative and media attention that they rightfully deserve. Harlequins 33-43 Leicester Tigers - Official Highlights 21-04-12 | Aviva Premiership Rugby

Tigers record run goes on against Harlequins Leicester made a devastating statement of intent ahead of the Aviva Premiership Rugby play-offs by coming from 13 points down to beat current leaders Harlequins 43-33. The victory sees the Tigers leapfrog Saracens back into second place, with a win against Bath in two weeks' time guaranteeing a home semi-final although they might be without England flanker Tom Croft, who went off injured in the first half at the Twickenham Stoop. In an action-packed first half, Leicester drew first blood through Thomas Waldrom's try, only for Harlequins to race into a 23-10 advantage courtesy of two tries from Ugo Monye and Nick Easter. But Leicester ensured the game remained in the balance at half-time as Steve Mafi went over to ensure they were only three points behind. While George Lowe's try restored Quins' advantage, Leicester went through the gears in the second half as a try from Alesana Tuilagi and Waldrom's second brought up the bonus point before Toby Flood, who finished with 23 points, rounded off the win with a late penalty. Leicester's intentions were clear from the off as Flood turned down a shot at goal and kicked to the corner, with number eight Waldrom finishing off a catch-and-drive under a heap of Quins players, with Flood adding the extras. The home team hit back immediately through a Nick Evans penalty and the New Zealander added a further penalty after one from Flood. The England hopeful then had a big hand in the next try ...

Leicester Tigers 43 v 13 Worcester Warriors Official Highlights 30-03-12 | Aviva Premiership Rugby

Former England fly-half Andy Goode was sent off as Worcester lost 43-13 to Leicester at Welford Road. Goode, who had already been sin-binned, received a straight red card in the 35th minute from referee Wayne Barnes for a flying shoulder charge on England flanker Tom Croft and was booed by the fans of his former club as he walked off the pitch with his head bowed. Leicester, who were leading 10-3 at the time, took full advantage of the extra man and claimed victory through tries from Scott Hamilton, George Chuter, Croft, Martin Castrogiovanni, Thomas Waldrom, Tom Youngs and George Ford. Toby Flood kicked three conversions, and Ford one, while Ceri Jones scored a try for Worcester, converted by replacement Danny Gray. He and Goode also slotted penalties. Leicester's sixth win in seven games moved them up to second place in the Aviva Premiership ahead of champions Saracens, who meet leaders Harlequins on Saturday. Leicester made eight changes, one enforced with scrum-half James Grindal replacing England's Ben Youngs, who was banned for one game by the club for punching London Irish No 8 Jamie Gibson last weekend. He faces a Rugby Union disciplinary hearing on Monday. Fit again winger Alesana Tuilagi, who leaves for Japan at the end of the season, was also recalled but his eagerly anticipated clash with Miles Benjamin, signed as his replacement for next season, bit the dust when Benjamin withdrew with a toe injury. His place went to Josh Drauniniu and Worcester made two ...

Chelsea 5-2 Leicester City: Torres back on form

Fernando Torres finally re-found his scoring touch as Chelsea comfortably beat Leicester City 5-2 at Stamford Bridge to progress to the semi-finals of the FA Cup. Gary Cahill and Salomon Kalou gave the Blues a half-time lead before a Torres netted either side of a Jermaine Beckford strike. A late wonder goal from ben marshall and a Raul Meireles strike gave the game an impressive scoreline. Roberto Di Matteo made seven changes to his Chelsea side after their extra-time victory over Napoli. Petr Cech, Branislav Ivanovic, Daniel Sturridge and Juan Mata were retained with Torres starting up front. Leicester made just one change to their line-up from the Championship game against Birmingham in mid-week, Paul Konchesky returning at left back after a suspension. The Foxes made a positive start to the game, Beckford finding space on the edge of the box and curling an effort just wide of the far post. Chelsea took the lead, however, as Cahill rose highest from a Mata corner to power a header in, the former Bolton man revealed a shirt as he celebrated with a message dedicated to former team-mate Fabrice Muamba as the midfielder continues to recover after collapsing at White Hart Lane on Saturday. The home side continued to press forward, Sturridge twisted and turned his way towards goal before feeding Mata who saw a bundled effort hacked off the line by Konchesky. And the pressure told as the Blues launched up the field on the counter attack, Torres taking the ball down the right ...

Leicester Tigers 30-25 Northampton Saints - Aviva Premiership Rugby Highlights Round 10 | 03-12-11

Late try gives Tigers the derby points Leicester Tigers snatched a dramatic bonus-point win over Northampton Saints in a pulsating East Midlands showdown at Welford Road. The match was contested by two teams of 14 for over an hour after Chris Ashton's clash with Alesana Tuilagi resulted in red cards for the Tigers winger and Northampton flanker Tom Wood. Leicester led after tries from Matt Smith, Steve Mafi and Ben Youngs, Ashton with Northampton's only reply at that stage. Tom May cut the deficit and Ashton set up Phil Dowson to put the Saints ahead for the first time since the opening 10 minutes, but Horacio Agulla edged the Tigers back in front late on. After a spell of Northampton pressure which saw referee Wayne Barnes knocked off his feet by a runner, an offside infringement allowed Ryan Lamb to boot the Saints in front. Toby Flood equalised in the 11th minute before the game burst into life. Ashton had barged into a couple of physical challenges early on. And it spilled over as Ashton tackled Tuilagi's elder brother Alesana out of play by his hair, sparking a fracas against the front of the stand which engulfed a dozen players and an unfortunate ball-boy. Despite not connecting with a punch, Alesana Tuilagi was red-carded along with Wood, who was spotted by the far-side touch judge throwing two punches. Agulla and team-mate Geordan Murphy were, like Ashton, fortunate to escape punishment. A lightning Saints break led by Ben Foden was stopped by Smith's tackle on ...

Jon Lord - Honorary Degree - University of Leicester

A short clip of Jon Lord receiving and responding to the presentation of the Honorary Degree (Doctor of Music) from the University of Leicester. Jon Lord was born in Leicester in 1941 and was educated at Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys, right next door to the University of Leicester. Moving to London at 19, he started performing with jazz bands and rhythm and blues groups, acquiring his first electric organ in 1963. In 1968 Jon Lord co-founded Deep Purple and during his eight years with the band, his Hammond organ riffs underpinned many great songs including the classic 'Smoke on the Water'. He also took the band in a classical direction by composing a major work, 'Concerto for Group and Orchestra', first performed in 1969 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Malcolm Arnold. After a brief spell as one third of Paice, Ashton and Lord, he played with Whitesnake between 1978 and 1984 then rejoined a new line-up of Deep Purple where he stayed until retiring in 2002 to concentrate on solo work. Throughout his career in rock, Jon Lord has continued a parallel career in classical music, recording and performing his own compositions. The last time Jon Lord visited the University of Leicester was 41 years ago when Deep Purple played at the Students' Union on 7 February 1970.

Leicester Tigers 11-3 Northampton Saints | Aviva Premiership Rugby Semi Final | 14-05-11

Northampton boss Jim Mallinder claimed Leicester's England midfield prospect Manu Tuilagi should have been sent off as Saints' Aviva Premiership Rugby title dream died at Welford Road. Tigers centre Tuilagi escaped with a yellow card after punching Northampton's England wing Chris Ashton eight minutes before half-time. Ashton, who required treatment as a result, was also sin-binned after an incident that reflected a game that rarely dipped below boiling point. Tigers wing Alesana Tuilagi's late try confirmed a seventh successive Aviva Premiership Rugby final appearance for Leicester. They will meet Saracens or Gloucester at Twickenham on May 28th. But the 11-3 defeat left Mallinder questioning the decision not to send off 19-year-old Tuilagi junior. He said: "First of all, you can't have players taking players out, and you can't be hitting players directly to the head, punching. Chris Ashton did go over and give him a push, but you cannot react with three punches to the head without a red card. "It would have had an effect on the game, because they would have been down to 14 men. But Leicester played well in the second half - it is fine lines. "I think the referee did go to his assistant. All I know is I have seen it, and to me, it is a clear red card. "It's a big game, live on television and it should be one of the highlights of the Premiership season. I guess the referees and referees' assessors will have a real good look at it and work as hard as they can to make sure ...

The Leicester Public Library was built in 1895, when the population of Leicester was 1000 people. Today, this same library serves a population of over 10000. While the library has been well maintained and served the community well, it is currently too small for current needs, and it is not, and cannot reasonably be made, handicapped accessible. It is our goal, through a capital campaign, to raise the $3 million for the project. We've received over $2 million so far. Since the original library was build entirely with donations from the community, we'd like to continue that tradition and raise the remaining $1000000 necessary to renovate and expand this fantastic part of the Leicester community. This video is totally my view of what happened on the 4th of Feb. I traveled around and filmed the EDL march and also got around to filming at the UAF base. Slightly cheesy, yes - but seriously, this is how it went down from my point of view!
