Léye Svirsky (Leah Swirski, Lili Holtzman), born in Svintsyán (the town's Yiddish name) in April 1926 (then Święciany, Poland; now Švenčionys, Lithuania) recalls some colorful characters from her youth. She also notes the local rendition Límpet of the name of the nearby shtetl Líntep (Líntup, etc; now Lyntupy, Belarus). She was one of the few to escape (in early October 1941) from Poligón, the murder-site of the 8000 Jews of the Svintsyán region, and her important memoir 'I was in Poligón' (in Yiddish, in the 1960s Svintsyán yizkor book) should appear in English translation as soon as possible. In more recent decades, Léye Svirsky is known as the long-time beloved administrator of the Yiddish programs led by the late Professor Gershon Winer. Her role is warmly credited in Winer's delightful (posthumously published) 'Gershon Winer: A Memoir' (2009). She works as a translator and is active in Litvak circles in the Tel Aviv area and internationally.
