At least 24 dead in Libyan protests

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi remains defiant in the face of large scale anti-government protests. In Tripoli, thousands of loyalists came out in support of the man who has ruled Libya for more than 40 years. For the moment, most of the violent unrest appears confined to the east of the country. But, even in the capital, Gaddafi's stronghold, film footage showed pockets of opposition, sparked by demands for greater political freedom and human rights. ... www.euronews.net

Who profits from Libyan protests?

It seems the people doing best from the turmoil in the Libya are US lobbyists that are attempting to influence Congress for their clients "best interests". Of Counsel with Patton Boggs Graham Wisner says it is important for lobbyists to analyze their clients' thoroughly, a lobbyist will be laughed out of the State Department for making the case for a human rights abuser.

Gaddafi Army attacks protesters across Libya in violent crackdown

Meanwhile, Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi is fiercely fighting to retain control of the capital as he's faced with more defections from his own regime. Sporadic attacks continue across the deserted streets of Tripoli, with reports of uprisings ongoing in nearby towns. After more than a week of revolts, the opposition is consolidating its gains, with demonstrators taking over the east of the country. The UN Security Council and Washington have demanded an immediate end to the violence. The EU is considering sanctions against Libya for Colonel Gaddafi's bloody crackdown on protesters, after some reports say the army used airstrikes against its own people. Several hundred protesters are said to have been killed, but the real death toll is feared to stand at more than a thousand.

Gadhafi orders air strikes on protesters, hundreds dead in Libya

Libyans are digging their heels in protests in key cities - despite the violent response from the police as they try to curb the anti-government demonstrations. World leaders are rounding on Libyan authorities - calling for an immediate end to the clashes. Increasing numbers of protesters are demanding for an end to the 41-year rule of Colonel Gaddafi. Hundreds have been killed and over a thousand injured during a week of unrest, with reports of airstrikes from the country's own military on Monday. Rumours spread that the Libyan leader had fled the trouble, but Gaddafi later made a brief and defiant TV appearance saying he was still in the country. One of his sons blamed exiles and outsiders for pushing Libya to the brink of civil war, and denied that live ammunition was being used on demonstrators. Some Libyan ambassadors have quit over the use of force on civilians in protest, and want the UN to intervene.

Video of Libya Army troops joining anti-Gaddafi protesters in Benghazi

Amateur video supplied by Libyan opposition groups is said to show the moment the army stationed in the Ghar Younis barracks at the outskirts of Benghazi joined the protesters in the city on February 21, 2011. Libya's leader Colonel Gaddafi is desperately clinging to power despite facing more defections from his own rule. He's battling to shore up control of the capital Tripoli and western areas, with protesters consolidating gains in the east of the country. Gaddafi told state TV that Osama Bin Laden and his followers are to blame for the uprising, and claimed protesters were given drugs to incite them to revolt. The overall number of dead after ten days of unrest has been difficult to determine, with estimates ranging from several hundred to over two thousand.

Iraq vs. Libya - Where are the Protesters?

The consistent anti-war champion of liberty - Ron Paul. "You may be wondering, "Why Vietnam and Iraq, but not Kosovo nor Libya?" Vietnam: (1) There was a draft (2) There was an "unsexy" and "uncharismatic" Democratic¹ President in office. Kosovo: (1) There was no draft (2) There was a "sexy" and "charismatic" Democratic President in office. Iraq: There was a Republican President in office. Libya: (1) There is no draft² (2) There's a "sexy" and "charismatic" Democratic President in office. ¹Republicans never knew a war they didn't like. ²At least I'm hoping that there would be protests if the draft were reinstated. One can no longer be sure." - David Kramer ( tinyurl.com ). Unfortunately Pakistan was left off the list - this really does go to show - there are too many wars to keep track of. "Left-wing politicians take away your liberty in the name of children, [the environment] and of fighting poverty, while right-wing politicians do it in the name of family values, [war] and fighting drugs. Either way, government gets bigger and you become less free." ~ Harry Browne

Wag the Dog: Media blamed for covering Libya unrest with fog of war

The fog of war has settled over the ongoing unrest in Libya. There are conflicting reports on the number of killed, airstrikes by Gaddafi forces, the number of cities controlled by the opposition - about literally everything. Last week a wave of reports suggested the opposition was in control of almost the whole country and colonel Gaddafi was doomed. RT's Okasna Boyko went to opposition held Benghazi to find out why these turned out to be exaggerations at best. RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com RT on Twitter: twitter.com

ANN NEWS :: Libya 1/17/2011 Riots and Protests - iReport

Welcome to Libya... January 17th, 2011. Today is the fourth day of rioting and protest across several cities in Libya. The frustrations of the Libyan people over a failing government subsidized housing plan for the poor has spilled out onto the streets of Beida, the third-largest city in Libya, Darna, Zuwara, Zawiya, Tajoorah, Bayda, and Benghazi. It seems that after the successful revolution in Tunisia, people across the Arab world are getting similar ideas. There have been reports of activists in Libya breaking into and taking over hundreds of housing units. The Libyan people are certainly angry. Muammar al-Gaddafi has issued statements over his grief at the fall of Ben Ali's regime in Tunisia. Many speculate he fears a similar occurance in his own country. There has been rumors of mass internet censorship accross the country, and it has been confirmed that YouTube.com has been censored in order to suppress protest videos such as these ones. There has been little media coverage of the events in Libya. Do the Libyan people want a democracy? Will they fight for it as hard as the Tunisians? Only time will tell.

State Terror: Deadly Libya strikes 'NATO policy, not mistake'

Rebels have stormed and looted Colonel Gaddafi's compound in Tripoli after three days of fighting in the Libyan capital. Angry crowds vented their anger at the portraits and luxuries at the compound - while the location of Gaddafi himself is still not known. He made his second radio address in the space of 24 hours, calling on his supporters to cleanse the capital. He claims that his retreat from the compound was a tactical move and promised to fight to the death. RT on Twitter: twitter.com RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com

'Bilderberg Hand': Deadly chaos in Libya, Bahrain as Wave of Rage spreads

Government buildings are reported to be on fire in the Libyan capital Tripoli as demonstrators demand an end to the 41-year rule of Colonel Gaddafi. The son of the Libyan leader blamed opposition groups and outsiders for instigating the protests. The army is reported to be using live ammunition against demonstrators, with international organisations putting the current death toll at over 200. In a televised national address Seif Al-Islam Gaddafi said this number was exaggerated, also dismissing reports that his father fled the country. Meanwhile the unrest continues to spread further through the region with protests in Yemen, Bahrain and Morocco. Regional expert Adrian Salbuchi says that global dominance groups are behind the wave of revolts.
