Death toll rises in Libyan unrest

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi is confronting the most serious challenge to his rule in 42 years. Government forces have been unleashed onto protesters in the eastern city of Benghazi, where one hospital official put the death toll at 200. Al Jazeera's Stefanie Dekker takes a look at the scale of the unrest in the country.

Video of bloody Libya unrest as protests rage in Tripoli, Benghazi

Libyans are digging their heels in protests in key cities - despite the violent response from the police as they try to curb the anti-government demonstrations. World leaders are rounding on Libyan authorities - calling for an immediate end to the clashes. Increasing numbers of protesters are demanding for an end to the 41-year rule of Colonel Gaddafi. Hundreds have been killed and over a thousand injured during a week of unrest, with reports of airstrikes from the country's own military on Monday. Rumours spread that the Libyan leader had fled the trouble, but Gaddafi later made a brief and defiant TV appearance saying he was still in the country. One of his sons blamed exiles and outsiders for pushing Libya to the brink of civil war, and denied that live ammunition was being used on demonstrators. Some Libyan ambassadors have quit over the use of force on civilians in protest, and want the UN to intervene.

Foreigners Flee Libya, Unrest Hits World Markets

Foreigners were continuing to flee Libya the day after a defiant Moammar Gadhafi vowed to fight to stay in power. Unrest in Libya and elsewhere in the Middle East has hit stock markets and sent oil prices soaring around the world. (Feb. 23)

Libya unrest raises oil concerns

This is the first time that the changes sweeping the Arab world have hit a major oil producer and there are now fears that the spike in oil prices could hurt the fragile global economy. While Libya only produces two per cent of world oil production, 85 per cent of that is sent to Europe. Al Jazeera's Nick Spicer reports from Berlin.

Gaddafi blames Libya's unrest on al-Qaeda

Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan leader, has said in a speech on state television that al-Qaeda is responsible for the uprising in his country. This is the first 7 minutes of his speech. Speaking on the phone from an undisclosed location, Gaddafi said the protesters were young people who were being manipulated by al-Qaeda, and that many were under the influence of drugs.

How Libya unrest impacts the global economy

The aftershocks from the unrest in Libya are also being felt across global financial markets. Libya is the world's 12th largest exporter of crude and the price per barrel has shot to a two-and-a-half year high amid investor fear that production could be disrupted. It follows a speech by one of Colonel Gaddafi's sons, Saif, who warned that all foreign oil companies might have to leave the country. Rising oil prices can accelerate inflation and eat into companies' profits, further unsettling an already rocky global economy. ... www.euronews.net

Col. Gaddafi blames bin Laden for Libya unrest, sends in mercenaries

Libya's leader Colonel Gaddafi is desperately clinging to power despite facing more defections from his own rule. He's battling to shore up control of the capital Tripoli and western areas, with protesters consolidating gains in the east of the country. Gaddafi told state TV that Osama Bin Laden and his followers are to blame for the uprising, and claimed protesters were given drugs to incite them to revolt. The overall number of dead after ten days of unrest has been difficult to determine, with estimates ranging from several hundred to over two thousand. The EU's considering sanctions against Libya for its leader's bloody crackdown. Meanwhile the Swiss government has ordered a freeze of any locally held assets belonging to Gaddafi. With Libya following the revolutionary path of Tunisia and Egypt, some experts believe the crisis in the Arab world is the result of years of misguided policies in the west...

World Oil Prices Soar Over Libya Unrest

Oil prices soared to a new two-year high Monday as escalating violence in Libya fueled concern about supply disruptions. The price of Brent crude oil in London, the benchmark for much of the world, surged more than two percent - to more than $105 a barrel on fears that growing unrest in the Middle East could spread to other major oil producing nations. George Galloway interviews Professor Paul Rogers on Libyan unrest

From BBC News: United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has urged the global body's Security Council to take "decisive action" over the Libya crisis. He said violations of human rights had been carried out by Muammar Gaddafi's regime, and more than 1000 had died. Speaking at a meeting of the Security Council in New York, Mr Ban warned of a growing refugee and food crisis. In Libya, reports say anti-government protesters in the capital Tripoli came under heavy gunfire on Friday. Witnesses reported deaths and injuries as militiamen and government troops confronted protesters as they emerged from mosques following Friday prayers and started demonstrating in several areas of the city. At the same time, Libyan state TV showed Colonel Gaddafi speaking from the Tripoli's old city ramparts, urging the crowd to arm themselves and defend the nation and its oil against the anti-Gaddafi elements who have taken control of large parts of the country. "We shall destroy any aggression with popular will," he said. "With the armed people, when necessary we will open the weapons depots. So that all the Libyan people, all the Libyan tribes can be armed. Libya will become a red flame, a burning coal." Later, at a hastily organised news conference at the UN in New York, Libyan deputy ambassador Ibrahim Dabbashi described Col Gaddafi, who has been in power for 42 years, as a "madman". He warned that thousands would die in Tripoli because the Libyan leader would never flee and would fight to ...

He accused Gaddafi of planning a wide-scale attack on his own country-men. The Italian Foreign Minister told reporters that more than one thousand Libyans may have been killed in just eight days. The UN Security Council demanded an end to the violence on Tuesday, while the Arab League suspended Libya. The French president has called for EU sanctions against the country.
