FINANCE Minister Michael Noonan has officially turned the sod of a new multi-million euro unit on the grounds of the Mid Western Regional Hospital. Construction of the €13 unit, which is supported by the JP McManus charitable foundation, is being funded by the Mid-Western Hospitals Development Trust, the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland and the Parkinson's Association of Ireland. When completed, the six-storey unit will bring together existing, and in some cases deliver new, services for patients under one roof - saving lives and increasing life expectancy in the process. In addition to five floors dedicated to breast diseases, stroke/neurological conditions, skin disorders and Cystic Fibrosis, the unit will also include a canteen for the Dooradoyle hospital, replacing the existing canteen on the ground-floor. "Getting to this stage is a milestone moment for our three organisations but, moreover, it is signalling the beginning of a new era and standard of care that will enhance the quality of life for hundreds of thousands of patients across the Mid-West region annually," said Una Anderson Ryan, Chairperson of joint-committee established by the three organisations. The LFC also organizes events such as festivals, competitions, and mass meetings every fourth Sunday of the month, and help immigrants to Ireland to settle in and integrate with the local Irish community. A Filipina, Jinkie Fogarty, who has Irish born children, says that strong family ties is what she sees as common values. 'Filipinos value family as much as we value religion. We see the Irish people as having that same value about family. Limerick is my life. I will live here until the end of my life,' she tells me.

On 17th March, University of Limerick founding president, Dr Ed Walsh led more than 4000 colourful participants in Limerick's St Patrick's Day Parade as Grand Marshal of what is believed to be the largest parade in the country. The 220 member University of Missouri Marching Band took the top prize at the Limerick International Band Championship on 18th March in front of 40000 spectators in Limerick. The 2012 Limerick Lifelong Learning Festival took place from Monday, March 26th to Sunday, April 1st. Limerick is now the official 'murder capital' of Europe THE latest murders in Limerick have have tipped the statistical scales to make the feud-blighted city Europe's murder capital. The Shannonside city has the highest per capita homicide rate in Western Europe, after overtaking Glasgow to claim that dubious distinction. Limerick has a ratio of over seven homicides per 100000 population, according to CSO data, while Glasgow recorded just over five killings per 100000 of its population. Gardai are seizing an average of 500 firearms a year in Ireland -- 10 times more guns than they were seizing from republicans and criminals during the Troubles. Despite having so many guns and the city with the worst homicide rate, Ireland is still rated the safest country in Europe. A WHO study on homicide rates in Europe puts us at the bottom of the league, just below Malta. The highest murder rates are in Latvia, followed by Lithuania and Estonia Figures released by the Minister for Justice, Mr Brian Lenihan show an apparently inexorable rise in homicides involving firearms in Ireland. In the past decade, the annual number of deaths from gunshot wounds has risen fivefold. The worst year to date was 2006 with 26 firearms deaths. With nine already this year, 2008 is showing signs of being another record or near-record year for gun homicides. International rugby player and current Munster Rugby captain Paul O'Connell was made a Freeman of Limerick at an outdoor ceremony in Limerick this past Sunday. The 32 year old received the honour in front of a large crowd of members of the public and invited guests. Many well know faces were present from the Irish rugby community including current Irish coach Declan Kidney and present and former players; Ronan O'Gara, Donncha O'Callaghan, Marcus Horan, David Wallace, Alan Quinlan, Keith Earls and Peter Clohessy. Paul O'Connell has captained the British and Irish Lions team, the Irish Rugby Union Team and is the current Munster Rugby captain. Recognised as one of the best second rows in the world, the 32 year old educated at Ard Scoil Rís is a world class lineout jumper and a forward of immense power and presence. Richard Lynch of I Love Limerick, which is dedicated to portraying Limerick city in a positive light, has been named the Limerick Person of the Year 2011. Richard was revealed as the winner by Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan who was guest of honour at a gala awards dinner in the Clarion Hotel. On accepting his award, he told the attendees - which were made up predominately of Limerick people including last year's winner JP McManus - that "amazing things are due to come out of Limerick and we must own our destiny and stick together."
