Gioachino Rossini - L'italiana in Algeri (1813) - Alternative Aria for Lindoro - "Concedi, amor pietoso" (Gregory Kunde)

Rossini was not above rewriting his music to suit the particular characteristics of a singer or a production. The performance history of "L'italiana in Algeri", following the premiere at San Benedetto, is no different: a production at La Scala the following year saw two important changes - Isabella's cavatina is replaced by a larger and more elaborate (though less interesting) "Cimentando i venti e l'onde", while Lindoro's rather slight original "Oh come il cor di giubilo" gives way to the present piece, "Concedi, amor pietoso"; whereas in the case of the former the substitution is no competition to the original, the latter is undeniably a very attractive piece and a perfect replacement. The aria is thematically similar to the original but the simplicity of the one-sectioned "Oh come" transforms into the beloved "cantabile - cabaletta" "Concedi" and a very lovely one, at that. The cantabile, set to falling string lines and an elaborate clarinet solo, is completely on par with the lovely "Languir per una bella" (also, the alternative is linked to the first aria by the similarities of their orchestration), while the cabaletta, though not as immediate, is still more than delightful, providing the tenor with some breathtaking coloratura. While I do not know, if Rossini reused an earlier piece for the cantabile of this particular piece, the cabaletta also appears in an alternative to Tancredi's opening cavatina, already posted here: www.youtube.com (I added a link just in case ...

Young buck Lindoro is in love with Rosina, who is the ward of crusty Dr. Bartolo. Wanting to deliver a love note to the closely guarded Rosina, Lindoro disguises himself as a drunken soldier so that Bartolo might offer him quarters. However, Bartolo himself intends to marry his young ward—and so produces a document to deny Lindoro admittance. Hijinks ensue. Opera Theatre of Yale College presents L'Italiana in Algeri Act 1, Scene 3

Casey Breves '09+1, tenor, and Stefan Weijola '11+1, bass, play Lindoro and Mustafa in the Opera Theatre of Yale College's Spring 2010 Mainstage, L'Italiana in Algeri. In this scene, Lindoro, an Italian servant, is pining over his love, whom he lost at sea traveling to Italy, and Mustafa, an Algeria sultan, interupts him and informs Lindoro that he has tired of his wife, so Lindoro must marry her immediately.

Gioachino Rossini - L'italiana in Algeri - "Pappataci!" (Ruggero Raimondi, Frank Lopardo & Enzo Dara)

Out of all the ensembles from "L'italiana", the present would have to be one of my personal favorites. Surprisingly, many Rossini operas are home for an ensemble for bass, baritone and tenor: "Il turco", "La pietra", "Semiramide", "Guillaume Tell", as well as others, come to mind, making this possible situation a part of Rossini's idiom. Written in a very free structure, the present terzet follows Lindoro and Taddeo informing Mustafa of Isabella's plans to make him her pappataci. This, as Lindoro explains, is an Italian custom and a great honour, as the "pappataci" enjoy an idyllic life dedicated to eating, drinking and sleeping. The piece is multisectioned, with only the final concentrated section readily recognizable as a "stretta". The piece opens with several phrases, first excited and then confused, for Mustafa, before being taken over by Lindoro in a flowing cantabile. After several other explanations from Taddeo and a descending coloratura flourish for Mustafa, Lindoro's cantabile is repeated as a concentrato with the basses bubbling their way below the tenor's elegant line. The final "stretta" can be called so only relatively: it features two opening solos, following the same musical language, for Mustafa and Lindoro, before settling in a delightful ensemble with Lindoro and Mustafa trading coloratura over Taddeo's patter. The finish is brilliant: the men, tired from all their excitement, slowly paces themselves, with the music going more and more faint, before ...

Gioachino Rossini - L'italiana in Algeri - "Languir per una bella" (Raul Gimenez)

It is sometimes said that Lindoro is one of the less interesting characters in the perfect Arabic romp that is "L'italiana in Algeri". In essence, he is less colorful than the people who dominate his life: Isabella and Mustafa. Lindoro is a perfect Pierrot character: a nice, gentle fellow that is just unable of fully taking charge of his life. He must primarily be believable as Isabella's lover. And some would put a line here. But, considering the opera's close ties to rescue operas, we must note another important moment: Lindoro's comic stature lies in the fact that he is the one captured, rather than Isabella who comes fully armed to rescue her lover. Considering the history of rescue operas, shouldn't in be the other way around? Lindoro is perhaps one of the only male characters' in rescue operas who have the distinction of being the ones needing saving. A most interesting moment and worth looking into. Lindoro also has the distinction of being given some of Rossini's most beautiful music for the tenor voice. That is especially obvious in the case of his beautiful opening cavatina. Again, though the music is breathtakingly beautiful, we must remember that in the usual circumstances it would have been sung by the heroine, lamenting her poor fortune. But here it is the other way around, bringing an unusual comic dimension to Lindoro's lament. Still, despite this side to the aria, it is one of Rossini's best invocations of love. Starting with a full rendition of the ...

Gioachino Rossini - L'italiana in Algeri - "Pria di dividerci da voi"

There are just too many inspired and genius sections in Rossini's ideal Arabic romp of "L'italiana in Algeri" to single out any highlights. But the Act One Finale is exactly the quirky and funny number that end the first part of the opera with a big enough bang. Not only is it musically enchanting, but it also incorporates several charming ideas that would be only possible in Rossini's world: a striking dramatic confrontation (Lindoro and Isabella finally meeting each other; Mustafa and his entourage growing more and more confused; the Italians beginning to create their plan of escape); a charming fluidity of form (the opening andante slowly moves from terzet to duettino to full concentrato); and, finally, the excellent final allegro playing out as a sort of vocal/instrumental piece with various sound effect (from Mustafa's "bom-bom" in the bass line to Elvira flute-like vocalization). The cast is as follows: Isabella - Agnes Baltsa, Lindoro - Frank Lopardo, Mustafa - Ruggero Raimondi, Taddeo - Enzo Dara, Elvira - Patrizia Pace, Zulma - Anna Gonda, Haly - Alessandro Corbelli. Enjoy :)!

Gioachino Rossini - L'italiana in Algeri - Ouverture (Marriner)

The year 1813 proved a productive one for Rossini, with several important works: "Il signor ", "Tancredi", "Aureliano in Palmira"... In between came an opera that nearly didn't happen. Carlo Coccia, who had accepted a commission to compose an opera for the Teatro San Benedetto in Venice, apparently ran into difficulty in completing his assignment. Rossini accepted the offer from the theater's impresario and wrote "L'italiana in Algeri" in less than a month. Given the tight schedule, the composer turned to a libretto already in existence, one by Angelo Anelli, already set by Luigi Mosca (Meyerbeer1's channel includes a version of the duet between Isabella and Taddeo by Mosca, do check it out). Although Rossini was likely familiar with Mosca's opera, significant additions and changes were made to the libretto. The 21-year-old composer elected to go for broke with the effects of his ensemble writing. The opera was premiered on May 22, 1813, to applause that, according to one critic, "thundered without pause". "L'italiana" was the first of several important Rossini comic operas to hold prominent roles for lower female voices, the third, to be precise. The protagonist is a determined Italian lady, sung by contralto, who travels to Algiers to search for her lover, Lindoro, kidnapped and held as a slave by Mustafa, the Bey of Algiers. Isabella's wit and charm prove too much for Mustafa and his retinue, and she is able to escape with Lindoro at the end, leaving the Bey fuming ...
