Venomous Lionfish - Oceans - BBC

Phillipe Cousteau Jr and his team investigate how the Atlantic Ocean has been invaded by the poisonous lionfish. A few years ago they didn't exist in the Atlantic, but now they are decimating the local fish stocks and have been seen as far apart as Puerto Rico and New York. Lionfish Population Has Scientists Worried

The venomous lionfish are considered a danger to people, coral reefs and commercial fisheries. (August 4)Netting these beautiful but dangerous fish in the Atlantic is the first line of defense against a fast-growing and hungry army of invaders.A voracious predator, lionfish are an exotic species whose population explosion continues to threaten the US east coast and spread further south throughout the Caribbean.Scientists are struggling to understand this fast moving phenomenon ... But they are already sounding the alarm."They have just literally exploded through time, a population explosion - it is like a plague of locusts." Oregon State University Professor Mark Hixon was leading a team of research students studying coral reefs in the 1990s when they first noticed invasive lionfish. They were forced to change their research matter when the lionfish moved in."What we found was that lionfish reduce the abundance of small fish on coral reefs by 80 percent in just a five week period."The US government has continued to monitor lionfish spottings and tracked a substantial jump in sightings in 2004."They went up the Gulf Stream into North Carolina and established a population, over to Bermuda and then in about 2004 we started seeing them in the ...

Lion Fish

A Lionfish is any of several species of venomous marine fish in the genera Pterois, Parapterois, Brachypterois, Ebosia or Dendrochirus, of the family Scorpaenidae. The lionfish is also known as the Turkey Fish, Dragon Fish, and Scorpion Fish. [1] The lionfish are voracious predators. When they are hunting, they corner prey using their large fins and then use their lightning quick reflexes to swallow the prey whole. They are notable for their extremely long and separated spines, and have a generally striped appearance, red, brown, orange, yellow, black, or white. Canon ZR800 Cam Test

Snapper gets Lionfish

January 12, 2011 West End Wall, Roatan, Honduras Location: 16.26905 N 86.60288 W Depth: 80 ft In the linked video you can see licensed lionfish hunter and Healthy Reefs Coordinator in Honduras, Ian Drysdale, feed a speared (and dead) lionfish to a mutton snapper, as an interested nassau grouper looks on. The video was taken by Melanie McField, Director of the Healthy Reefs Initiatie. Still photos were taken by Marisol Rueda, Healthy Reefs Coordinator in Mexico. The incident occurred about 15 minutes into the dive. The Nassau grouper began following Ian about 5-10 minutes into the dive and the mutton snapper joined along shortly after. Both fish seemed particularly interested in following Ian and watching the spear keenly. Spearfishing is banned in HN and the fish show no fear of the spear or the divers in general. In response to the lionfish problem authorities are allowing managers like the Roatan Marine Park to license certain trained individuals to use special lionfish spears to remove lionfish from the reef inside and outside the Roatan marine park. Both fish were approximately 30-40cm length. Dive guides from Roatan also report that the following species have been seen consuming speared lionfish: groupers (several species), snappers (including mutton and yellowtail) spotted and green morays, and grey reef sharks. Some plan to attempt to train the fish to consume live lionfish, as has been reported from Cayman.

Lionfish PSA

Lionfish have invaded coral reefs in Florida and the Caribbean. They are not natural. They were accidentally introduced in the 1980's around Miami from the Pacific Ocean. Now their numbers have skyrocketed. The problem? They eat the juveniles of coral reef fish and compete with the economically important snappers and groupers. The good news: They are great to eat! The solution? Pick up a speargun or grab a collecting net. Just watch out for their venomous spines.
