Celebrating Liturgy at the Ethiopian Orthodox Chapel, part of the building complex that is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, is something quite extraordinary. The church claims its origins from Philip the Evangelist (Acts of the Apostles, chapter 8) and became an established church in the 4th century through the efforts of the Syrian Greek Frumentius. The intro to this video shows a maniple and a chalice veil, and explains what they are, what they mean and where they came from. This video is about the further developments within the New Rite of mass. It explains how they have their origin in some ambiguous statements in Sacrosanctum Concilium. www.vatican.va In paragraph 23 it states : "Finally, there must be no innovations unless the good of the Church genuinely and certainly requires them; and care must be taken that any new forms adopted should in some way grow organically from forms already existing." There were no clarifications as to what constitutes a genuine and certain requirement. Many liturgical abuses have become legalized by a liberal interpretation of this citation. Some changes that were obviously not genuine and certain requirements that did make it into the liturgy: Removal of traditional vestments, fiddlebacks, maniple, amice etc... Removal of the two confiteors which create a distinction between the priest and the people. Removal/making optional of every of every sign of reverence given to the Eucharist. Removal Traditional Sacrificial Offertory prayers in favor of a Jewish prayer of a blessing of a meal. Removal of the Last Gospel. Changing the centrality of the liturgy from the Eucharist to the, next most sacred thing, human life and the community. etc....
