November 9th 2011 - 'It's a Revolt ' - Students march in London

From: Russia Today 'It's a Revolt!' Students march in London Published: 09 November, 2011, 16:30 Edited: 09 November, 2011, 19:33 Students took to the streets of London en masse on Wednesday to fight government funding cuts and a massive hike in tuition fees. But rubber bullets and police intimidation threaten to turn the demonstration into a bloody affair. The demonstrators gathered at the University of London in the center of the city around noon. Some 10000 people were expected to take part in the march against the privatization of education and other attacks on the welfare state. However RT's Ivor Bennett, who is reporting from the scene, estimated that only several thousand had shown up as the march began. Other estimates put the total number of protestors at 5000. It has also been reported that a group of protesters managed to break away from the main route, where they went on to erect around two dozen tents in the heart of the city on Trafalgar Square. Otherwise, the police have thus far been successful in managing the march, keeping protestors away from potent symbols like the Bank of England and the London Stock Exchange. No reports of violence or arrests have surfaced since the march began over two hours ago. Having been criticized for their mishandling of previous protests, the police announced they would be out in force this time around. With 4000 officers being deployed, the run-up to the march was fraught with tension. rt.com ...

A YouTube video shot during the November 9 student rally in London allegedly shows plainclothes police acting as agents provocateurs among the protesting crowds. The video uploaded by the user "noshockdoc" shows two people who first engage in rough handling of one of the rally protesters. Then, reportedly, the same people are shown along with six others detaining someone behind a police cordon. The media dubbed the November 9 march against tuition fees and education cuts one of the most intensively-policed events to take place in London. The force had 4000 officers on duty on the day, and they were authorized to use rubber bullets if necessary. This was never needed, however. The Met reported that 24 arrests were made on the day. Some of the protesters reported incidents of violence which they said had been caused by the security forces. "The police tried to provoke people to react violently, and some people had to act in self-defense against police attacks, but we all supported one another and prevented the police from causing a riot," one of the activists, identified only as 'Dan', told the Oxford University student newspaper Cherwell.

Not your stereotypical protester, as "noshockdoc" calls himself, he went to the demo to protest against the policy, which is bound to divide British education system into two tiers, based on wealth, not merit. He says the episode shown on the video occurred during the end of the march and is very disturbing. It looked like a fight was provoked by plainclothes policemen, while their uniformed colleague turned a blind eye to it. "A young member of the British public had been attacked and left visibly shaken, and the very person he would have expected to help him turned away. And on top of that it was a police officer that attacked him," he told RT. DISABLED PEOPLE RALLY & MARCH AGAINST WELFARE BENEFIT REFORMS (LONDON) 11/5/2011

An estimated 5000 Disabled People and supporters protested outside Parliament and marched to Millbank (Tory Party HQ), against the coalition governments planned cuts - in the guise of welfare reform to disability and long term sickness benefits. This includes scrapping IB (Incapacity Benefit) and DLA (Disability Living Allowance). The protest highlighted other service cuts for Disabled People, which attacked Independent living and education, to name just a few. It is felt by many that the government are manufacturing and using negative coverage of welfare benefit claimants in the media, in order to target vulnerable individuals and groups within the community. Those who are effectively silenced by non-existent positive or supportive press coverage, as was in fact the case with this peaceful protest, gaining virtually no coverage by the mainstream media/press.

Thousands of UK students protest tuition fees hike

timesofearth.com LONDON - Tens of thousands of students have protested against plans by the British government to raise university tuition fees, smashing windows and lighting fires in London, the capital. Wednesday's protest near the houses of parliament was the largest street demonstration in the country since the government announced tough austerity measures to curb public deficit. Some students attempted to force their way into the party headquarters of David Cameron, the prime minister, forcing the building to be evacuated. Several dozen protesters managed to get into the lobby of the building, while outside police faced off an angry crowd. "We are destroying the building just like they are destroying our chances of affording higher education," said Corin Parkin, 20, a student at London's City University. Student leaders, who said about 50000 people had marched through central London, condemned the violence as "despicable". The police reported that 14 people had been injured, including seven officers. Wednesday's rally was held to protest against the decision by the coalition Conservative and Liberal Democrat government to raise the cost of studying by up to $14000 a year. "I am here because it is important that students stand up and shout about what is going on," Anna Tennant-Siren, a student at the University of Ulster, told the AP news agency. "Politicians don't seem to care. They should be taking money from people who earn seven-figure salaries, not from students ...

Speech by Father Bernard Lynch, at "Protest the Pope" demo, London. 18 Sept 2010

This is a short speech from a gay Catholic priest, Father Bernard Lynch, made at the rally after the Protest the Pope demo in London, 18 Sept 2010. Transcript of the speech can be found here; www.protest-the-pope.org.uk An estimated 10000 people gathered in London to protest against the State visit to Britain by Pope Ratzinger. At the same time a much larger gathering occurred in Hyde Park, as the Pope was giving an open air sermon/rally to the faithful. The streets were closed & the anti-Pope demo marched from Hyde Park Corner to Downing Street, where a series of speeches were given by humanist & human rights campaigners such as Richard Dawkins, Peter Tatchell. Also a number of other speakers gave their views, coming from backgrounds such as a lady who had herself been abused by a priest, a priest who disagrees with the Vatican on many issues, etc. It was a very interesting, good-humoured, and fun day out. There were lots of very creative, funny, and sometimes rather offensive placards that people had made. Specific complaints agains tthe Pope's visit included these; - why should the UK taxpayer fund the est.£12m cost of the Pope's State visit, when his teachings are so wildly out of step with the British way of life, and British core values of tolerance, equality, and fairness? - the Vatican is not a proper State, and does not have a seat at the UN. GRITtv: Student Protests in London

A crowd reportedly of over 50000 British students rallied in London yesterday and marched to the Conservative Party headquarters to protest not only cuts to education budgets and hikes to student fees, but the ongoing attack on the social safety net in the UK by the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition government. In the name of "austerity," promises are being revoked, and the protests, which turned violent, could be a sign of things to come across the UK. We'll have more soon, but for now, check out this footage from our friends at the Guardian of the rallies. Distributed by Tubemogul.

[Part1] Second mass Student Protest turns violent in London [Nov 24, 2010]

Student protests turn violent in London A second mass student protest in London has turned violent with protesters complaining that the government would not pay attention to their peaceful measures. There had been a huge turnout for the demonstration - much more than the 20000 that the organizers had been expecting, a Press TV correspondent reported from London. There were strong feelings on the march - with much vitriol targeted towards Prime Minister David Cameron and his deputy Nick Clegg. Banners and pictures particularly accused Clegg, often in unambiguous terms, of betraying students, according to the report. The students accused the Liberal Democrats' leader of breaking his party's promise to students to vote against a fee increase. The protesters chanted slogans such as, "No ifs, no buts, no education cuts", "Ho Ho Cameron has got to go", and Tory Scum Here We Come". In London, violence intensified after protesters reached Trafalgar Square and police began arresting students. As the public frustration gathered pace among protesters, a group of students tried to overturn a police van, while other engaged in street battle with police. A protester told Press TV correspondent that the government and the media have been trying to induce an image of protesters that the public treat them as anarchists. "When we protested last week and it escalated into violence the media, kind of, portrayed a different image to what we were trying to communicate. So, hopefully we are ...

N30 Strikes - 50'000 march in London

www.socialistworker.co.uk Millions go to war on the Tories It was a historic day. Britain's biggest strike since 1926 saw the working class march firmly on to centre stage of the political arena. Over two and half million struck. It dealt the biggest blow yet to the government's attempt to make workers pay for capitalism's crisis. Towns and cities across the country saw huge rallies that brought workers together to defy the cuts. Over half a million marched—including some 10000 in Dundee, 20000 in Bristol and 50000 in London (see pages 4&5 for more). Picket lines were solid, well attended, and full of good spirit and determination. From gravediggers to chiropodists, the people who keep our essential services going stepped out to fight. The strike started at the earliest possible moment. Some 50 trade unionists at the Bristol Royal Infirmary welcomed in 30 November by walking out at midnight. The Homerton ambulance station in London had a roaring brazier early in the morning. The building was covered in home-made placards and banners. Inside, the workers had their paint pots out, putting the finishing touches to their latest banner. Kath Jennings, a paramedic at Homerton, told Socialist Worker, "The first shift stopped work at midnight. I wasn't sure if they would, but this turned out to be a solid 24-hour strike. "The person that does our tea club has bought so much food, you'd think we were going to be out forever." The day was filled with anger, but also good humour. In ...
