Emotional climax from Mr. Holland's Opus with Richard Dreyfuss as Mr. Holland and the enchanting singer Jean Louisa Kelly playing his student who performs this beautiful song to secretly tell her conductor and tutor (Dreyfuss) that she desires and needs him (to watch over her). In the audience sits Holland's surprised wife with the play's brochure after discovering the singer's name is Rowena (Morgan). A few weeks ago she overheard her husband composing a new melody calling it "Rowena's Theme". When asked about the name he makes up a pretext (even though he's actually loyal to his wife). However, during this performance she begins to wonder whether her husband is having an extramarital affair with the young singer. He does not but his face shows that he is tempted and flattered at the same time. Dreyfuss and his wife both have a lump in their throats (for different reasons) and so did I when I first watched this bold approach by the young student! Notice that the lyrics of the song perfectly match the film's interwoven story. Here's an excerpt: "Although he may not be the man Some girls think of as handsome To my heart he carries the key Won't you tell him please to put on some speed Follow my lead, oh how I need Someone to watch over me" Enjoy this captivating and literally breathtaking performance by Jean Louisa Kelly and all the other actors who IMHO make this scene most memorable!

The reggae musician Louisa Marks, who has died aged 49 from a suspected food poisoning at her home in the Gambia, was the fearless school girl who changed the course of reggae music. Marks was arguably the Queen of Lovers Rock a sub-genre of reggae noted for its romantic sound and bluesy content. Lover's Rock was a product of the UK reggae scene and Marks was its first major star. The genre gained wider acceptance in the late 1970s as mainstream roots reggae increasingly devoted itself to political protest and Rastafarian spirituality. Marks and Lover's Rock - - fondly called "music to make love to" - blurred the lines to a greater extent than ever before, pairing the smooth sounds of Chicago and Philly soul with reggae basslines and rhythms. Marks' seminal work is perhaps her 1975 cover of Robert Parkers classic Caught You in a Lie. That single, recorded when she was just 15, not only became synonymous with Lovers Rock, the track also helped put Britain on the global reggae map. Her sweet vocal style and updated rock steady rhythms made her a household name among lovers of reggae music the world over. From the time that "Caught You in a Lie" was released, Lover's Rock became quite popular among Black Britons seeking an alternative to political reggae. So sad to hear of the passing of Louisa 'Markswoman' Mark, who passed away this Saturday 17th October 2009 in the Gambia. Louisa Mark was an original Queen of Lovers Rock and was voted top female reggae vocalist of 1978. The fledgling singer cut her first record at the age of 15 for sound system operator Lloyd Coxsone. 'Caught You In A Lie', proved a huge hit amongst the reggae listening audience, with her heartfelt cry of misplaced trust. This was then followed by another success entitled 'All My Loving', a cover of a Beatles song. Despite popularity, Louisa quit recording for over 18 months because of contractual disputes. She was then linked up with house producer and A&R manager for Trojan Records Clem Bushay, veteran of the UK reggae scene, cutting her next hit 'Keep it Like It Is'. Again the song was well received but poor promotion proved disillusioning and despite the terms of her one year contract she declined to record further. Once free from Trojan, Louisa Mark's music began to take off. This track is her rendition of Michael Jackson's 'Even Though You're Gone'. It was released on the Bushays label and she followed this up with 6, Six Street penned by Joe Charles, Clem Bushay and The In Crowd, which hit the number one spot in its first week of release. Her music remains a staple of any lovers rock event and our condolences go out to her family and loved ones.
