You will notice a little white snowman in the video, his name is Mr. Bingle and he was an important part of Christmas in New Orleans and the surrounding area. When you saw him on TV you knew Christmas was on its way; it was difficult not to say Mr. Bingle and Christmas in the same sentence. For a little history on our infamous friend; once there was a department store named Maison Blanche which was founded in 1897 by Isadore Newman. He took a trip to Chicago and noticed a character in a store, Marshall Fields, called Uncle Mistletoe. He was a scraggily haired Dickenson character that became the inspiration for Mr. Bingle who was created and designed by Emile Alline, an employee of Maison Blanche, in 1947. Eventually Mr. Bingle appeared in musical radio and television commercials. He also appeared as a guest on other TV programs and made frequent visits to Children's Hospital to bring cheer and hope to many sick children. The puppet shows ended in 1985 when Isentrout died. The Cajun population of south Louisiana is predominantly Catholic and the birth of Christ is a sacred reason for them to celebrate. Also, Cajuns as a rule simply love to socialize, so their Christmas holidays often abound with visits, parties, parades, food, spirited drinks, gifts, decorated homes, and community festival of light celebrations. They try to give Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer a little help to find his way on Christmas Eve with their traditional bonfires. Some of the most well known are one hundred 30 feet plus tall bonfire structures, built of wood, firecrackers, and occasionally bamboo along the Mississippi River levee. Every Christmas eve, scores of bonfires are ignited to help light the way for Papa Noel so he can deliver gifts to all the good children in Louisiana's River Parishes, This year, we caught one of the best of the bunch just as its 20 foot high, fire-cracked laden tower fell in a grand climax. There were more than 8o of these fires lining the levee this year. Spectacular!
